Preview files will be overwritten in large projects

Post by Bernt Hansson »

Preview files are overwritten in projects that contain more than 700-750 preview files.
MSP 7.3 create preview files but after about hex 02FD (748 preview files) the file name counter was reset to zero and the creation of preview files continue that result in overwriting of already created preview files.
A strange thing is that a ".wav" file overwrite a ".avi" file when they have the same file name number.
The result is that the ".wav" files will overwrite most of the ".avi" files starting from the first ".avi file"(with file name number zero).
Anyone else know something about this problem?
I have report this problem to Ulead support department but have not got an adequate answer.
The problem is the same in MSP 6.0 - 7.3, maybe also in ver. 8.0?

Once I'm done with a project, I clear all preview files from my HDD. Not that I'm short of disc space but it gets rid of clutter that is not needed anymore. I fail to see where there is a perceived problem, if older files are overwritten? Could you please explain why this is a problem for you?

I have only one project i my project file manager. I have plenty of space on my harddisk and in the preview folder. The problem is that it is not possible to play the movie from timeline because the edit program begin to render the project from the beginning again and the reason is that the first preview files in the same project are overwritten.
To test the problem:
A project that is 50 minutes long and transition effects between every clips in the project.
This should generate more than about 750 preview files.

Are you previewing frame by frame? I have done projects of 120 minutes and did not notice a problem :?

Hi Bernt,

I don't understand. I do many projects that have well over that number of clips/transitions/overlays/compositor etc. and have yet to have it stop and render like that. I do have realtime preview... sometimes (lotsa tracks/effects/filters) the video is choppy cuz of too much load on the processor to handle the preview and output to monitor. The only time though, that it needs to render is when I create videos or such. I work in both dv and hd.. and import all kinds of weird stuff. What video format are you using?

Hi,
What do you mean with "frame by frame"?
I use realtime preview, not instant preview.
I use ordinary DV-format PAL 4:3.

This problem I have already in 2003 and I got help by Ulead product manager mr. Jack Hu and after a lot of troubleshooting I got a temporary solution as a veditor.exe file. But after updating with SP3 I got the same problem back again. I cannot go back to ver. 7.0 and put the temp solution in again because the project file is not compatible between ver 7.0 and 7.3.
Today it seems to be impossible to get help from the support department in this type of problem.
Since 2003 I have exchange my hardware completly so I don't think it has something to do with my hardware.
My configuration:
OS: Windows XP Proffessional
Ulead MSP ver 7 with SP3
Motherboard: Abit IC7-G
Processor: Intel P4 3,2 Ghz 1M cache
Graphic board: Matrox Parhelia 128 MB
Sound card: Creative SB Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro
Memory: 1 GB dual channel
HD: 4 x 250 GB Seagate 7200.8 SATA
