Archiving VHS: How can I blacken borders?

Post by anaeda »

hi there,

i have searched in the forum but didnt find anything.. maybe i dont know how to call this... (i only know it as "blacken borders"... :-()

after serveral tries with the software of my tv-stick, open-source progs i got ulead videostudio 8.

it works fine for vhs-archiving and recording from tv with huffyuf-codec in 356x288 (best for pal and animations) - but now i have the problems finding "normal" filters like in avidemux the "blacken borders" filter. :-(

avidemux doesnt work on my system with huffyuf in this size so i hoped ulead can solve some problems...

do i need another program?
or can the sdk-packages from the download site help me?
or is ulead videostudio 8 for editing "normal video material" from vhs the wrong choice?

thank you for help in advance ;-)

Hi anaeda, welcome to the forums..:)

If you are looking for a filter in VS8, that does what the "Blacken Borders" does in avidemux, then there is one such filter. The blacken borders filter just crops the video, putting a border, which is black around it.

So in VS8, with your clip in the timeline/storyboard,
1. Cllick on the Filter Tab.
2. Then in the Filters Library located on the Right, locate and drag the Cropping Filter to the video clip.
3. Now click on the Drop down arrow by Presets and there should be a small window of presets open up, with about 8 presets.
4. Select the preset located 2nd from the right, on the lower right.
5. Click on Customize.
6. In the dialog window that opens, the Height & Width should be 85 %. It maintains the 85% setting from the start to finish, it is static. If you want more of a border, change the height & width percentage. However if you change them, you must also change it on the last keyframe, for the size to remain static. You can also change the fill color from black to a color of your liking.

That's it, now you should have a black border around your clip...

Please be aware that filters such as the cropping filter are applied between two keyframes, and that the settings can be different at each key frame with a progressive change in between them.

If you don't verify that the cropping percentage is the same at the first and second keyframe, you might get an unpleasant surprise when the video has finished rendering.
