All SE versions are not the full programme - they have been modified to stop some functions which is why they are given away free - this usually stops DVD burning.
To overcome the problem you must upgrade to a "Full" version
Or you can use the 'Create Video File' option to make a file you can use in another programme to burn a DVD.

I am afraid the SE Basic version means that the burn function has been removed from the program. SE versions are usually bundled with hardware, and are always crippled in some way, and when Basic is added, it is the most crippled form.
There are two alternatives: either spend the US$49.95 to upgrade to the full version of Video Studio 9, which is a great program with lots more features than VS7. Or else you can go as far as you can with VS7 i.e. produce the file which you want to burn to disc, and then use a third party program like Nero to build a menu and actually burn that file to disc.
You say you only want to burn a CD, which is probably just as well, since I believe VS7 SE Basic may not even allow you to prepare an mpeg-2 file which is compatible with a DVD rather than a CD.

Whilst I'm sure that my fellow users above are right in your particular case, they are still not 100% correct in stating that SE versions don't allow you to burn CD's. It all depends on what hardware your VS 7 SE was bundled with.
I have a copy of SV 7 SE that came with my laptop with DVD burner. Since I'm not using it, I can't say to what degree it is limited (I wouldn't go as far as calling it "crippled"
), but I did try it out and I was able to create a DVD with it. When I check the about box in VS 7 for the version, it states VS 7 SE DVD.
It is safe to say though that SE versions do lack some of the features of the full versions and some times the patches released by Ulead are not suitable for the SE versions.
Once you have tried the software and feel that it is suitable for what you want to do, I'd suggest to get an upgrade to the latest full version.

9SE version allowed me to burn a dvd but didnt not allow the dolby sound.
I paid about A$70 for the full version and i am pleased i did. quite a steep learning curve to get all the kinks out but now i am getting a bit more proficient in it.
well worth the money and if you buy on line you can download the full manual from the ulead site
