Will DVWS Express allow me to "rip" or convert VOB files to AVI for editing? I'm not talking about copy protected DVDs, just DVD-R from either the computer or from a desktop DVD recorder. Sometimes I need to be able to edit previously authored DVD content for someone.
The fact sheet states that you can reuse content, but isn't very specific.
Thanks!
Will DVDA Express Allow "Ripping" of DVD VOB?

It can import from a DVD-R, but the import will result in *.mpg files (not .avi files). These are the .mpg files as they were when the DVD was assembled (so there is no loss in quality).
Each chapter in the source dvd will result in a *.mpg file during the import function.
In Ulead's mor erecent programs (MSP8, MovieFactory 4, VideoStudio 9...), the import function allows you to import titles as one long *.mpg file (instead of breaking them up by chapter mark).
Regards,
George

Depends on what you plan to offer your clients. If you need to edit the material, then you might want to look at VideoStudio 9 -- it has more EDITING functions, but not as much Authoring Templates and features as MovieFactory (but it can still produce a very nice looking DVD -- in terms of menus and buttons).
I would download the free Trials of each to see which fits your needs...
For DVD Authoring, if you need menu flexibility, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc..., then the best Ulead has for those advanced Authoring features would be DVD WS (Full or Express).

Thanks again, George. I do not need the video editing capabilty, that I do in other apps.
I have the OEM version of MF3.5 and can upgrade that to MF 4 Disc Creator. In the meantime I received an email regarding an incentive offer for purchasing DVDWS Express at a reduced cost. so I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck. The importing of VOB to either mpg or avi for editing is important right now. I can render out an AVI from mpg if I need it - getting the continuous file rather than the seperate chapter files is what I need.
Looks like MF4 is my best route for now. Thanks for your input. I'll consider DVDWS as my needs expand for more creative projects.

Thank you George.
George,
I just received our copy of MF4 Disc Creator version. Without consulting the manual I ripped a DVD with AC3 and exported the file to mpg, avi and Avid Quicktime formats and dropped the mpg and AVI files into After Effects (going to try the Avid timeline as soon as it finishes exporting the Avid QT) and they played happily along so it looks like it will do exactly what we needed at work. Plus, the DVD creation features look like they will be a lot of fun to use.
Thanks for your input! Now I'm going to get a copy for home as well.
