Hi,

Not a pain, if you don't know ask...:)

The split by scene function works on either:
1. DV Time Scan, VS detects the different Time stamps in the video. For example if you have clips that were recorded at different times on the same day, it detects that, and splits the video accordingly.
2.Frame Content; VS detects changes in the content of the Frames, and splits the video accordingly.

Hi,

I'll be doing lots of that in the next couple of days! :D

So what would happen if i have blanks in between my recorded scenes?

What would you suggest i should split my scenes as? and how?

I wanted to clip my movie in two min intervals as i want to add pictures softly appearing and disappearing....and transitions etc. Maybe i should split the whole movie manually.... can i do this without deleting any scenes?

Of course you can cut your entire captured video manually at any points you like. And in fact, I do this most of the time instead of using 'split by scene' since it gives you lots more control over exactly where the cuts occur. Splitting by frame content is not so bad, depending on the degree of sensitivity you choose before making this setting. But spitting by time, as you are proposing to do, can be counter-productive. You said you wanted to make automatic cuts every two minutes. Well think about what happens when at the end of a two minute sequence, and there is an ongoing action or something important happening. VS does not know this and simply chops that segment precisely when the two minutes are up. And then you have to later join those two bits together again and patch over the cut!

Anyway, to make manual cuts is simple. You move the little slider (inverted triangle) along directly below the preview screen, and the video frames will change accordingly in the timeline. You find where you want to make a cut, and use the little scissors directly below the bottom right hand corner of the preview screen to do so. Proceed this way throughout the video, making cuts where you choose. You will then have a series of discrete video clips along your time, including, I imagine some bits that you may want to delete. To do this, you simply click on that clip to highlight it and then press delete.

When capturing your video, in the capture module, you can select how the clips are split. Splitting by scene is to most suitable option since it will cut your clip whenever a lapse in time code appears on your tape (Stop/Start camera). This is the most natural way of splitting your footage into segments. Anything that happened after you switch off the camera is not present anyhow  but anything to taped from the moment you press 'Start' on your camera until you press 'Stop' is in one continuous clip.

If you happen to have longer clips at times, you can still split these manually after.

This also helps with one of the other post you had here, filters. There may be a clip with color distortion, you went from inside the house into the back yard and started taping before the camera adjusted to a suitable white balance. You don't have to sit through your video to exactly find this clip to add color correction filters, you will see it straight away when looking at your captured clip's thumbnails.
