Recommended Procedure = Capture Probl

Post by antzpompeii »

Ok - I'm going to start from scratch so i am trying to follow the 'recommended procedure' thread posted in this forum.... except i've run into my first problem!

DV Type 1 is recommended because users have experienced problems with AVI Type 2.
So I set DV Type 1

The following capture properties will yield good quality video when burned to a DVD. (In PAL country, substitute 25.00 fps for 29.97 fps and substitute 720 x 576 for 720 x 480):

I go to TOOLS > Make Movie Manager > Click on PAL DV > then EDIT.

Go to General Tab > Change Frame Rate to 29.97 fps and changed the Frame Size = Standard to 720 x 480

Then Click on AVI Tab > Compression is DV Video Encoder Type 1

Clicked OK and then Close.

Problem is:
When i go to Capture Options in the Capture panel.... it shows me the frame rate still at 25 fps and the frame size 720 x 576.

What am i doing wrong? why won't it change?

Plssssss help.

Thanks
Antz

This is what it should be as per the recommendation thread.AVI Capture Properties:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3 (or 16:9 for widescreen), 29.97 fps
Lower Field First {if analog use "Upper Field First"}
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Ah but you don't want to change it !!!!!!

If you are in Australia then you should be using PAL settings for which the frame rate is indeed 25fps and the picture size is 720 x 576 .

The settings given in that recommended procedure are for people who use NTSC such as America - in Australia you use PAL

Here in the UK like you we use PAL and a typical project setting for me would be :-

PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

see if you can set similar

Hi Brian, and thanx for your fast response...

Although just going back to the Recommendation Thread,,,, it says:

Hi

How are you capturing your video?

If you are using a digital camera connected via fire-wire then you have little options to choose. You capture to Dv-Avi, this is 13 Gb per hour.

The footage from your camera is copied to your pc, a bit like ‘copy and past’ but in real time. What you have on your camera is what you get on your pc, no re-coding of your video takes place.

Start a new project.
In File – Preferences-- tick –‘Show messages when inserting first video………’

Capture Tab –Capture Video
When you select the ‘Format’ as DV the option should remain as DV.
VS should control your camera.

Select ‘Options’ you should only have two:- Capture and Dv-Type.

The only option to choose is the Dv-Type 1.

The capture settings can be viewed in the information panel.
Capture a short test clip. Video studio should change the project properties to match the video file.
These are the typical properties of my DV capture. (Panasonic GS 400)

Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Check out my Quick Guide for DV-Avi Capture.

Should i keep the 'Project Settings' to match the 'Video Properties?

Hi

Yes, where ever possible it is best to match your video and project settings.

Capture to Dv-Avi
Edit using the same settings.
Share –Create video File- This will render your project to a new complete file

If you choose ‘Same as Project Settings’ you will make an Avi file.
This can be transferred back to your camcorder for archiving. (assuming your camera supports this function)

If you choose Pal-Dvd you will get a file compatible with Dvd burning. (up to one hour)
Use this in Share Create Disc—Add video

Do i want to archive AVI back to tape? why would i do this? Is it easier to open the file later should i want to edit?
If you choose Pal-Dvd you will get a file compatible with Dvd burning. (up to one hour)
Use this in Share Create Disc—Add video
I want to first do the AVI file and then create Disc and convert to dvd format.... you see i want to make a dvd with the original video & audio and a menu.... and i also want to edit the same movie but burn to another dvd... (this one will be with all the transitions no voices but music and photos etc.

But i think to do either project i should have the AVI file first right?

I should also add,,, my tape has a blank space in between footage.... what happens with this... it seems only to be capturing the first half of the tape.... is there any way i can get the whole tape captured?

If you capture to Avi then edit you can then convert Share Create Video File.
Some users have found that by creating an Avi first gives better quality, rather than rendering from the project to Mpeg.
Others convert their avi project direct to Mpeg2.(pal-Dvd)

Once you have an Avi it will need to render again to create a Mpeg 2--- Pal-Dvd file.
You should make your Mpeg 2 file (pal-Dvd) then go to Share Create Disc. Add video.

You then use the Mpeg to burn a dvd.
You should not use the Avi to burn as this will cause VS to render the avi again in the burner stage (not recommended).

Ok - sorry if i sound stupid here.... but you let me know if i'm on the right track.

I capture my tape as AVI/DV Type 1 onto my HDD

My first Project
I then go to Share > Create Disc > DVD = apply my menu etc and burn.

My Second Project
I then go EDIT Tab etc..... apply transitions / pictures / music etc.

Then i would like to add a menu and chapters.... and burn to dvd.... (so how do i do this from here)? I've read on the Recommendations thread that i should not burn dvd whilst i have anything on my timeline. so what would the next step be?

No

Read the recommended procedure again
Read my Guide to Dv-Avi
http://www.stephen-wray.co.uk/lata/vs/g ... de_avi.htm

Basically this is what you should do.

1----Capture to Avi (this produces a file about 13 Gb)

2--- Edit your Project, adding transitions, filters, images, titles, audio etc.
The project is saved as a VSP file.

3--- Share Create Video File ‘Select Pal—Dvd (4:3)

This process will take a long time (about 3 X the length)
You now have a Mpeg File of your movie.

4---Share Create Disc—Add Video (use the Mpeg File)
Make sure your project properties match the mpeg video file.

Now create your menus/chapters.
