Burns great, then it doesn't, then it does, then....AAAARGH!

After sorting out my hardware to capture in MPEG2(thanks to Ken) I have been copying my old VHS tapes to DVD using VidStudio9. I've copied a dozen or so without problems but now I keep getting this blasted ERROR 5213 coming up. I am following the recommended procedures religiously but still get errors. I am now using a WinTV-PVR150 to capture and a LG DVD to burn. The project properties hardly vary and I am careful with them. Why am I getting this problem? Anyone help?

Hi Jag77,

When are you getting the Error? While capturing, editing, or burning?

Hi Vidoman,
The error appears right at the last hurdle, after "finalising VOB"etc. It burns up to 10%(sometimes only 1 or 2%). Two messages appear:- Error 5213, and a second box referring to my DVD drive:- DVD+RW-SPT1-2A-02-03-0C-00 .(whatever that means)

I use a "variation" on the recommended procedure that has never failed me - I burn to Disc Image (creates a .iso file) rather than directly to Disc. Then I use either the "VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder" supplied with VS9 or Nero to burn the resulting .iso file to DVD.

In my opinion (:-)), VS 8 & 9 seem to suffer problems when burning directly to disc - it doesn't seem to matter how you put together your content prior to that (again in my opinion :-)) i.e. the "recommened procedure" states "don't use add project" for instance - but I do it that way all the time :-)

So whatever process you want to use - avoid the "burning to disc" option of VS 9 - always burn to Image File (.iso) and you should be OK :-)

Anyway, give it a go - unfortunately with this "feature" of VS8/9 nobody (in the user community) has ever been able to definitively point the finger at one single portion of the process and say "that is the culprit" - personally I believe that it is the "burn to disc" but am unable to provide proof...

Now that Nero has been mentioned, if you have Nero on your system, do you by any chance have the Nero InCD module installed? Or a Roxy packet-writing software? (That's the software which handles simply dragging and dropping a file or files on your CD drive letter and it then opens a disc-writing program.) These programs are known to cause conflicts with the burning engines of other programs, including Video Studio. With InCD, there is no alternative but to uninstall the program totally (just the InCD module, not Nero as a whole). With Roxy, you can disable it internally while you are writing to disc in Video Studio, and re-enable it afterwards.

My thanks to PeterMilliken and again to Ken Berry for your responses. I will try as you suggest Peter as soon as I have removed the InCD that you spoke of Ken. Yes, indeed I have got it on my system. I had removed the entire Nero package that came with my LG DVD hardware after seeing something in another post about conflicts but then reinstalled InCD alone after more problems that caused me to think that maybe I had deleted some essential driver from the LG DVD unit. I read from your response Ken, that Nero(excluding InCD) is ok. I am very pleased about that since some of its features are very good and I have been using its Backup utilities.
I will let you know what happens asap.

:D Wahooooo! Success! My thanks to Peter and Ken. Creating a Disc image file first and then burning to disc works great. Getting rid of InCD probably helped as well AND I've got my NERO back! Thanks guys!

... and what is more, you can do without InCD since XP provides the same service free of charge! (I think the Roxy program is a bit more sophisticated...)

:D Hi Ken! I'm all in favour of F-O-C, especially after the amount of money spent on hardware and software to burn these DVDs, not to mention the many, many hours trying to figure out how to get it to work!

Without your help I would certainly have given up.(I wonder how many have?) I am really glad I didn't.

Thankyou
