Video Playback is fine, but sound jumps back a few minutes

Post by webguygary »

Sometimes I burn a DVD that plays back the video fine, but somewhere along the way the sound jumps back to a section that already played a few minutes earlier. This doesn't happen with every DVD I burn but it happens enough that I'm sitting here searching these forums for an answer.

What's your video/audio source?

Post by GeorgeW »

What format are your source videos? Using what type of audio?

source vids are divx, so whatever that codec uses for sound, there ya go...but the divx files play fine in the avi format, as I do reviw them before converting/burning them onto DVD. I use Movie Factory for the whole process, nothing fancy...like I said, sometimes it messes up, but not always

ok, I just checked the mpg files created in the conversion process (in the folder called "Convert"), and that's where the trouble is, it runs into this snag on conversion to mpg. Is there a way to run the conversions FIRST, so I can review them for errors before wasting my time and a perfectly good blank DVD? Better yet, why are the conversions periodically getting messed up like this in the forst place, and how can I prevent it in the future?

yea, I was guessing divx -- seems like lots of issues come up from using divx source videos.

Can you strip out the audio to a .wav? and then use the .wav as a replacement audio file in DMF?

hmm....interesting idea, but isn't there a way to do JUST the conversion process first, so I can check the quality before I go thru the burn process? I have no idea how to do the solution you suggested, stripping out the sound into a wav, etc...

Software encoders

Post by GeorgeW »

There are other software encoders. DVD MovieFactory does the encoding when your project is done.

You could create a dummy project, load in the divx videos, and just burn them -- as you noticed, the converted mpegs get put into that work folder.

If you like the outcome, then you could create a new project, and use those temp *.mpg files (that start with the "~" symbol as your input videos). By using them, you won't have to go through the encoding process again (which can be lengthy depending on your computer horsepower).

thanks, that seems like a good solution, and less time/labor intensive than finding out AFTER the DVD is burned...even though I'm runnnig a 64 bit AMD 3400, it still takes a while to do everything, and sometimes disappointing just to find out it might not have been successful.

so what you're saying is I can encode the divx vid first, it doesn't matter if I use Movie Factory or some other program, and if it's a successful conversion, then add to project already encoded. I like it.

Thanks Again,
