Hi Michele,
You've made 24 posts and you haven't complete your system information in your profile...
Please complete it.
This almost appears to be a problem with your graphics card, since you can control your camcorder with the programs, but are having the same issues with several programs.
You can go to Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information. Then run a DirectX Diagnostics check.
Also check to see if you have the latest WHQL certified drivers, and/or the latest drivers for your graphics card..
Regards
Ron P.

Michele,
Thank you for providing the information. Have you been able to capture using your firewire before this problem occured? If so, that would indicate something like your firewire cable maybe bad. Can you borrow another one to see if you have the same problems? It could also be the firewire port.
Have you had any other problems with viewing graphics or video on your computer? Any recent crashes, hangups? Did you run the DirectX diagnostics, and did it show any problems?
When you plug in or turn on your camcorder does windows recognize it? When you click Go to My Computer is the Camcorder listed, like a Drive?
Then one last thing, try unplugging your firewire from both the computer and your camera. Make sure the camera is turned off before unplugging or plugging in anything. It can cause damage to the camera. Then shutdown your computer, unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds. Then plug the computer in, and turn it on. When it is fully booted, plug the firewire cable back in. Do you hear the new device tone? Does windows acknowledge you just plugged it in?
Then turn on the camcorder, and start DVD Moviefactory to see if things have changed...

Hi,
Using ServicePack 2 there have been problems reported with the Firewire interfaces. (Not on all systems).
I would goto the Microsoft web site troubleshooting guide.
Always plug the camcorder into the computer with the camcorder OFF.
Then turn the camcorder ON. Never hotplug a firewire cable the same method as a usb cable.
Never plug the camcorders firewire AND USB cable in at the sametime.
This can cause damage to the camcorders interface circuitry.
To see if windows is recognizing the camcorder after it's plugged in and on open up "My Computer". You should see it there, double-clicking on it will bring up screens to preview the contents if windows is working properly.
Or, under "Control Panel" use the "Scanners & Cameras" icon to access the device. If windows doesn't load the device then no video program will be able to access the device.
Nice PC Specs.
Hope this helps,
MD

That's good that your system is now seeing your camcorder
Now to get Movie Factory to see it, which it is recognizing the camcorder is present, just had trouble connecting to it.
Try this if you haven't...
1. Turn off your camcorder.
2. Close MF.
3. Turn on your camcorder, place it in Playback.
4. Windows should have prompted you, asking what you want to do, Capture/Edit with... and provided a list of programs to choose from. DVD MF should be one of them.
5. Select DVD MF.
6. Once DVD MF is open, are you now able to capture?
I only have DVDMF4 so I don't know the layout/workflow that MF3 would have. In MF4, I click on the camera Icon to capture. It then shows my camcorder is present, (Sony..and then the capture driver, which is Direct Show)..
Are we getting closer to success?

Hi,
In MovieFactory you probably need to change a setting.
But, Under "My Computer" your camcorder shouldn't be displayed as
a "Drive Letter". That is an interface setting within the camcorders setup menu. It should simply show up as a device.
You may have an option in the camcorders's setup menu that references the IEEE1394 or iLink port and it's Mode of operation.
Mode's may be "Streaming" or XXX_Compatible. I would check that. Windows may be thinking you have a "Camera" connected and not a camcorder, they are different. Just like flash drives or memory sticks.
Within the windows window you should be able to hit the play button on the camcorder and see the video playing in the window.
Check you cam's setup menu settings the and go to MF and click on the capture Icon.
First to start goto the MF's Capturing Module.
Clcik on the "DownArrow" to display addtional parameters.
Click on "Advanced Settings" Icon -> then
Click on "Device Control" and then click on the box "Current Device", I think for firewire it's the "MS 1394 Device Control" selection but many times it can also be the "TI 1394 Device Control".
Then in that same screen click on the "Options" icon and you should see your camcorder listed as the "Active Device".
Note: If you have more than one camcorder connected this is the screen you can assign the other camcorder or device.
You may also have to change the "Capture Plugin".
The 2 standard modes are for direct Mpeg2 capturing or DV capturing.
Click on "Advanced Settings" Icon -> then "Change Capture Plugin".
The "Ulead DSW MPG Capture Plugin" is for direct coversion to mpeg2 video format (not recommended unless you have a fast computer, which you DO!).
The "Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin" is for standard DV capturing and is the standard capturing for most video camcorders.
After you select the "Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin" then go back to the Device Settings screen and verify the correct driver and make sure your video camera is recoginized.
Note: If there are any special drivers or equipment that MF4 can use to capture with they will showup under the "Change Capture Plugin".
I have a small usb camera that showsup in that screen although I don't use it for capturing.
Hope this helps,
MD
