Problem with jitter when viewing DVDs

Post by jaschrumpf »

Using VideoStudeo 8, I've made some DVDs from football games I captured on DVR. When I view the resulting .mpgs, there is no jitter; however, when burned to DVD the jitter is very apparent, especially when the camera is following a ballcarrier down the field and the yardlines are going past very rapidly. The image of the yardline "vibrates," like a guitar string, producing an almost double image.

I'm using the standard settings for DVDs:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

The "do not convert compliant MPG files" box is checked.

I've tried changing a few settings: video data rate down to 6000, changed audio to MPEG instead of LPCM, changed to upper field first, pushed the compression up to the highest "quality" setting.

Nothing changed the output to DVD; it's still very jumpy.

I only have the codec ULEAD MPEG Now Encoder; are there any others I can use? Are there any other settings I can try?

Thanks!

This does almost appear to be a field order problem, however it seems that you have tried changing that with no differing results. Do you have the apply anti-flickering filter box checked? I know that generally applies to images but it may help in your case.

I done a quick search on the forum for "jitters' and found a couple of possibilities.

1. Do you have Norton Antivirus installed and running in the background?
a. There is one post where a user experienced jitters and Norton was causing it. http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... ght=jitter

2. Are you using a VBR (Variable Bit Rate) or CBR (Constant Bit Rate).
a. I located a post where it was mentioned that some players can not handle the VBR, so CBR was recommended.

When you tried the different settings, did you keep that "do not convert compliant mpeg files" checked? If so, and if your source files are dvd complaint, then the change in settings will not make a difference until you uncheck that option.

Is the program taking a while to encode?

I did uncheck the "complaint mpeg files" box for one of my tests, but not all of them. It made no difference when I did uncheck it, but I don't remember exactly what other settings I used at that time.

The program takes a reasonable amount of time to encode (<30 mins), which doesn't seem to indicate a problem.

1. Do you have Norton Antivirus installed and running in the background?
Yes, I do. I'll try shutting that down during a burn.
2. Are you using a VBR (Variable Bit Rate) or CBR (Constant Bit Rate).
I am using a VBR. I'll try a burn with a CBR and see what happens.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll give them a try.

Also, I looked at the program I'm using to capture the data. It's WinDVD Creator 2, the only program that works with my Plextor ConvertX PX-M401U (according to Plextor). I see that I have the capture settings at DVD-EP (Extended Play), which is a 277 KB/sec capture rate. The DVD-SP (Standard play) rate is 589 KB/sec, while the DVD-HQ (High quality) rate is 1027 KB/sec. I should try at least the HQ setting and see if that makes a difference from the front end.

Thanks again!

Since it looks what you know what you are talking about, can you explain it to me?
I never done anything like this before- I also have a DVR .
Can you tell me the best options to put on like the size and format?
I am completely in the dark - I don't even know how to capture it because I get an error (cannot preview screen or something)

Thank you soooooo much

If you have the Plextor video capture device, you have to use the capture s/w that came with it, and then import that video into the Ulead s/w. If you try to use the Ulead capture feature you will get that error.

What I do is make a "raw" capture of the original video at the highest possible quality so that I've got the best possible source to work with. Then I pull it into the Ulead app and do all my edits.

I haven't tried any new burns since February, so I don't know yet if any of the suggestions will work. Still, I get great video for web/computer viewing; it's just on my TV that I get the jitter; and that may well be just because I don't have pro-quality equipment.

So, start with the s/w that came with your capture device and then import it into Ulead. Once you get there you'll see how nice and easy the Ulead app is to use.

Good luck!
