Re-linking Video Files not working automatically

Post by bills204 »

I have created a video with many scenes, music, etc. When I open my project within Video Studio (version 7), it asks me to relink EVERY video file in the project!

Weird thing is, Video Studio indicates the name and location of the file that it was not able to relink automatically when I open the project. Guess what? The file is located in EXACTLY the same location what was specified by Video Studio.

So now, I click the relink button, and it asks me to go find the file. I go to the folder that Video Studio had indicated, and click on the file.

By the time I relink about the fifth or sixth file, suddenly Video Studio indicates that all of the files have been re-linked successfully.

Is this a timing issue or something? Is Video Studio actually attempting to relink all the videos in background, and its just taking a few minutes to relink all the files?

What gives?

Can you tell us if the video files you wanted were on an external hard disk and whether that disk was turned on when you started VS7? I ask because some people think that because they have icons of the clips on the VS 7 library pane, they clips themselves are also there somewhere. If in fact you clips are on an external disc which is not turned on, VS 7 (and 8) will of course not be able to find them and will come up with the re-link message. Your project file and indeed the icons on the library pane, only tell you were the files themselves are actually stored.

If the foregoing does not relate to your situation, the only other thing I can think of is a very uncertain one. I recall that many users of VS 7 (and some of 8) had trouble after daylight saving was introduced and this somehow changed the parameters of what VS 7 was looking for in the original clips. A patch was brought out for VS 7 which, IIRC, worked. (Similar patch in VS 8 did not have uniformly positive results.)

I realise the daylight savings change occurred some time ago, but if by chance you captured your clips and started your project some time ago, and only just now got around to resuming it, this might be your problem.

Sorry -- a comment on the way this Board is set up. I note that I have two smilies in my last post, when I certainly never used any. The two smilies in question substitute for what I type which was a reference to VS8, following by a closing bracket. I assume the 8 and the bracket together make up that particular smilie, but it is annoying...

You could just edit your post Ken and use square brackets or re-phrase your wording so that the 8 and the bracket are not next to each other.

Or use the checkbox below the post body to turn off smilies when you write it. I think you can also make that the default in your profile if you don't have a sense of humor...

I couldn't laugh at that one because I have my smilies turned off.

On relinking in Ulead 8, if I move an entire folder frommy C: drive to my D: drive, and all of the files within this folder are used in a project, will ULEAD 8 relink them all or will I have to relink all 35 clips or so?

My experience has been that if your re-link one or two clips, the rest seem to be re-linked automatically if they were all in the same directory originally and have all been move to one other directory.

In VS8 however if you dont have the daylight saving patch installed from before xmas this is exactly what VS8 starts doing!

Perhaps the daylight savings bug has caught up with VS7.
