trouble trying to burn DVD

Post by bhales »

I have Video Studio 7 and am trying to burn a DVD of a video I created. Reading the documentation, I see I need to format the CD in the "proper format." The documentation is not very specific about this. I'm guessing I can't format it using Video Studio 7 and am wondering how to best accomplish this. Can I buy preformatted cds or is there another tool I need to get to do the formatting? Perhaps a later version of Video Studio will do the formatting?

I want to create a DVD to use on the DVD player attached to my TV.

bhales, pardon me but I'm a bit confused. What formatting are you referring to? DVD media and CD media do not need formatting. I know using some drag and drop software requires a disc to be formatted so it will work as a drive letter. Is this what you mean? Also, you can't create a DVD with a CD. You can create a VCD but not a DVD.

I'm not surprised you don't understand my question. I'm very new to this and I'm probably not asking it well. I'm trying to take a video I created (source was my camcorder) and write it to a DVD. I thought I could use my CD-RW discs, but based on your response, I'm guessing that's not true. So I purchased a few DVD-Rs, but apparently they can't be used in my CD (writable) drive. Do I need to purchase a different drive to be able to write DVDs? Or is there another method which can use my CD drive?

(since I'm new to this, I may have also sent this response to your email)

Hello bhales,

I think we need to clarify a few things first. In order to burn a DVD from your camcorder footage you will need a DVD burner and DVD blanks.

From what you are saying, I gather that you may have a CD-R/DVD combo drive. These allow you to read DVD's but can only burn to CD.

You have two options. First, you can create a VCD or SVCD from your footage and burn that to CD with your existing burner. The picture quality is not what you may expect though. VCD is somewhat less than VHS and SVCD a bit better than VHS but certainly not like DVD. It all also depends on the quality of your source clips and the encoder you use. Also make sure that your DVD player can actually read SVCD, not everyone can.

The far better solution would be to replace your combo drive with a DVD burner. They are quite affordable now and, as long as you stick with a reputable manufacturer, easy to use. These burners allow you to read/write CD R/RW and DVD media. DVD's come in different flavours also and I recommend to go for a multi format drive that can use DVD + or DVD - media. AFAIK, DVD -R/RW is the format with the least issues when it comes to playability on set top DVD players but DVD +R/RW is also supported by many players.
