Does VideoStudio 7 SE support existing MPEG2 files?

Post by who4ever »

I have a number of files I captured with VS9, trial version a while ago that I wanted to start playing with. I don't have VS9 anymore, but I do have VS7 SE that came with my USB2 card. I went to the file, right clicked on it and opened with Video Studio. Error message came up, that the file was not compatable, or something. I like VS9 and will probably buy it, but am I right that VS7 cannot open the files? Will VS9 be able to? And how to I get the files in the library?
Thanks
Dave

VS7 should open the MPEG files no problem. The project files created with VS9 maybe an issue but I have never tried so I'm not sure.

As far as I know, VS 7 SE does not have DVD support. If that is the case, then it will also not be able to read mpeg2 (DVD compatible) files.

Furthermore, mpeg2 is not really an editable file format either. If I were you, I would recapture my clips in VS 7 and start from there.

The SE of version 7 that I had supported and burned DVDs and I used it for a couple of years. I think it is the basic version that does not.

I happily stand corrected if that is the case. However, it doesn't get more basic than the SE version. SE versions are bundled with hardware in most cases.

I remember falling for the Media Studio Pro 6.5 Directors cut version once (upgrade download from VS5 to MSP). When installing it, it was listed as a MSP 6.5 SE version and some of the update patches were not suitable for it. It also did not have certain modules like VideoPaint and CGInfinity if I remember correctly. Because I had a number of problems with it, I decided very soon to upgrade to MSP 7 full version.

Be that as it may, if it supports DVD, it should read mpeg2 files also. Why doesn't it I wonder.

I have a copy of VS7 but it's not installed. It came bundled with my SAMSUNG laptop. The manual would suggest that it can handle DVD/mpeg2 files. Without installing it there is no way of telling whether it is a SE version or not.

Although I do not want to use the laptop for video work or, indeed use VS 7, I may install it when I find the time to investigate further.

I wasn't trying to correct you. I just wanted to let him know that I had an SE version of 7 that did work. It came bundled with a DVD burner that I purchased. If I remember correctly, I didn't have access to the extra content that comes with the full version. I used it for a couple of years, skipped version 8 and updated to version 9.

I just dug up the disk my VS7 was on and on the install menu it actually says Video Studio 7 SE DVD. So maybe there is a version with DVD support and one without?

Didn't feel corrected either, just wanted to indicate that I wasn't fully qualified to make a statement like that. If yours was bundled with a DVD burner, no wonder it included the DVD capabilities. That is part of the problem with ULEAD programs, especially the SE versions. You can never be quite sure what you get  I received my first VS, version 5 SE with my IEEE1394 PCI fire wire card and needed to buy the DVD plugin separately just to be able to output SVCD. Didn't have a DVD burner at that stage.

Hi who4ever,

when you look at the Help menu >About VS, what does it say there? version 7 SE or version 7 SE DVD?

If the DVD bit is missing, your version of VS7 may need a separately available DVD plugin. At the cost of that plugin, compared with what you have to pay for the upgrade to VS 9, I wouldn't bother and go straight to VS 9.

Yes that will happen.

When you open a file, video studio is expecting a VSP file ( Video Studio Project) (VS 7 will not open VS 9 projects)
If you try to 'open an mpeg you will get the error.

To get an mpeg 2 file into the timeline you have to insert it.

Open VS 7
Click the 'folder Icon Lower Left' and select insert video, browse for your mpegs.
And how to I get the files in the library?
You can also use the library to store a thumbnail of your files, then drag the thumbnail to the timeline. (click the folder icon top right--browse your files.)
Use the library manager to make your own library pages (click the down arrow at the top and select 'library manager'

Hope this Helps
