I have posted before on this issue and with help from you all I thought I had the problem licked. But it will just not go away!. Historically, MF4 has had problems burning to DVDs so for the last 6 months I have been using Nero to burn the MF4-produced ISO image - at only 4x burn speed, as suggested by many of you, because this is the maximum read speed for most home DVD players out there. I have recently had problems with even 4x burn (using Ritek 8x blanks) and have been burning at 2x just to be sure. Previously I though that this should work on ANY DVD player, but a customer of mine has just bought expensive Onkyo DVD players and even at 2x speed the playback stops or flickers occasionally, just as it did when I burnt at 8x speed.
I have 4 DVD burners but the ones I use most are:
1) Sony DRU-700A (rev VYo8)
2) Ricoh MP5308D (Rev 1.B5)
I thought the problem maybe with Nero, so went back to see how MF4 burning had improved. Not much it seems. Apart from the never ending problem mentioned above, can anyone tell me why, when I set my Ricoh to burn at 4x speed (using MF4 options) MF4 insists on burning at 8x, also when I use the Sony and use MF4 to set the burn speed at 4x, it burns at 3x (which is not even a MF4 option)?
Thanks

When someone suggested to burn at 4X I don't think they meant it to be in relation to another(s) dvd players reading speed.
The laser does a better job of cutting the dvd burning at the lower speeds. Producing a more reliable CD/DVD with less errors.
As far I know most consumer CD players spin at 1X and use read-ahead into a buffer.
I guess you have downloaded and installed the latest update to MF4?
I also have Sony burners & Nero 6/7.
I wouldn't think the Sony unit would give you trouble. Doesn't Nero have utilities to error check cd/dvd's and the speed test etc.
I've have similar problems. Not with just MF4, also Nero.
Ended up being the burner (Older Lite-On unit, I gave it an enema).
Your burners are brand name. Shouldn't be a problem.
For video I've been using Brand Name 4X rated dvd's not the 16X rated ones.
I do burn with MF or data-add. For video burning I usually create dvd
folders and use Nero for burning with the verify feature turned on.
To me it's worth verifing the dvd before using it.
There was a problem with Data-Add always burning at MAX speed
no matter what you manually set it to burn at. They supposedly addressed that in one of the updates.

Hi,
No, Don't remember ever seeing 3X. Is that with reading different media also? I mean not with the Ritek's, maybe a Sony Dvd etc.
I'll have to watch the screen when burning. I think that 4X is reached
after 1/2 way into the dvd. Don't think they write at 4X starting in the
center.
Occassionally I check the Sony site for firmware updates.
After installing the latest firmware on the 700a then Nero could change the BookType of DVD+R. It wasn't available before the update.
Installed the firmware update on the 510a unit and I guess that one can't
change the booktype of DVD+R because it's not available.
Take a look at the "Processor Usage" running "taskmgr.exe" when burning. It should be very low (below 4% average).
I do have some dvd-r's that the 510a unit refuses to recognize.
I do have some dvd-ram disks and a ram burner (not sony).
That unit will burn at 3X, but the disks are rated for 3X.
