Disapointed

Post by dlublink »

Hey everybody,

I just finished my first DVD that I made with the trial version of DVD Workshop.

I have never been more disappointed in my life with how something turned out.

The controls in the software were terrible, the interface was terrible, the options were too limited, and at the end when i managed to get it compiled onto a DVD it looks terrible on the machines which I tried it on.

The application is very inconsistent, sometimes you can only use the mouse to do what you want (highlighting text, for example) and sometimes you can only use the keyboard(cutting and pasting in menus), but in other places the same operations can only be done with the mouse (cutting and pasting full menus).

When you stick your DVD into the TV and select the menu you want, the highlighting is barely noticable and unless you have a very high definition machine you can't see anything.

There is no maximize/unmaximize button. The recent projects links don't tell you the path (how do you distinguish between invites.dws, invites.dws and invites.dws.) When someone makes backups as they go, this software is very confusing.

The interface definitly leaves much to desire.

I will not be buying the software.

An update,

I downloaded Nero. In 2 hours I did with Nero what I could not do with Ulead in 3 weeks.....

Hi Dlublink. You have many options and templates you can choose from. The resulting video you see on the machines will be a reflection of the quality of what you’ve captured and encoded. You will see exactly what you specify. If you want it high quality, it will take more space of the resulting disk, but you can get extremely high quality. It’s easy to specify. On your Burn menu select the highest Disc Template option. This will burn the highest quality available to the video you’ve already captured, to your disk. You can’t get a higher quality than the source video you already have.

I’m sure the most important thing is available and it’s that you can get to the features. This happens to be a characteristic with most programs.

This is a feature totally customizable to the user. You can set the way any of your buttons appear when selected or activated. From your Menu screen select the Button tab, then select the button you want to color map. Then click on the color mapping color you want, or click on Customizing for an unlimited range.

I can’t say I understand this part. Maybe someone else will comment on this.

I find DVD Workshop to be an excellent DVD Authoring package. It’s the best I’ve seen so far. The only complaint I have is that the interface is full screen and you don’t have the option for dragging and dropping media. I believe this type of interface retards the potential of a “Power OS User”. I hope this is addressed in all of Uleads products, especially the DVD Workshop updates.

How could anyone compare DVD Workshop with Nero? They are worlds apart. NeroVision is taylored for the complete beginner level. Show me in Nero how to create multiple levels of interlinked menu structure and custom layout options with the same flexibility as in DVDW and we'll talk again!

I've done a lot of stuff with DVD Workshop, and never had much problem usually it's more user error of my part (for not mathing correct info with 5.1 and such, etc). The only thing I've noticed is since I like to encode my files from avi to mpeg2 with another program for quality control, I have to take the info out of DVDWS and bring it back again otherwise, it will assume the same length and audio info (if I've changed it it will not be reflected)

But other than that, the program been really great, I've done one with 4 different audio trcaks, a lot of goodies, a small video clip between each menu etc. Soon to play with subtitles. So far, it has been a good product, at least to my perspective, it's easier than Adobe Encore DVD 2 :)

Well comopletely opposite to your experience, I found this program a breeze to use, and the dvd I created works perfectly in 3 differernt home players, and both my computers. Aside from a scene selection question which I posted here (and I think might be a cockpit error, though not sure), I find this the easiest way ever to create a dvd. I am puzzled by your expereicne, and not sure what Nero has to do with anything? Apples and oranges I think. Oh well, try Encore if you want complete confusion and complexity I like this as its so intuitive and down to earth, and I am a very techincal person. But who needs it? I jut want to whip out menus, scene selections and move on to the next project, and I find this software the eeasiest way to do that. I am very impressed, ....so far anyway. :)
