I just downloaded VS9 to see if I like it. I'm creating a test project and during the menu creating section, I found that I'm unable to use certain photos as backgrounds to the motion menu. When I try to add the .jpg as a background, I get a window that simply says the selected .jpg could not be added as a background. There is no error code or any other explanation offered.
I tried many other .jpg files that work fine. This file is no larger than the others and doesn't have any characteristics which distinguish it from others. It opens fine in any program.
I've been on old with Ulead Tech Support for about 30 minutes and it keeps telling me I'm in "cue postion 1." Any suggestions?
Unable to use .jpg file as menu background

There must be something different about that .jpg from the others - one nice thing about software is that it is consistent - it is either consistently wrong or consistently right
. I have no experience with determining .jpg differences, so I can't help you with why one file works and the others don't.
As for a suggestion on the fact that you have been on hold to ULead Tech Support for 30 minutes - I would suggest that you hang up and have a look at this:
http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
This review rates PowerDirector above VS9 - perhaps try that?
Experience on this forum would indicate (I have no personal experience, I can't afford an international call for that length of time) that ULead Tech Support either doesn't exist or is a myth (perhaps an exaggeration
I do remember somebody posting here stating they had a response from Tech Support - maybe it was the one day of the month he was working?
)
Best of luck,
Peter

Could this be a progressive jpg, the sort of pictures you find on the web that first open in lower resolution and later in full resolution? As far as I remember, those are not accepted by VS

As far as I can tell, this .jpg is no different than the others I try. All of them are simply photos I took with my digital camera. I was actually able to use a photo I downloaded from webshots.com with no problem. I actually got this picture to work as a background at first, but then it went to a black screen. When I tried to reinstall it as the background, that's when I got the message that it could not be used. Also, some of my chapters went black too. 3 still worked, 3 didn't.
You're right about their customer service though. I don't think any type of tech support or customer service exists. It's too bad b/c I think it's essentially a good product.

Note for PeterMilliken --
Do you feel we can believe those "ratings"? Last year I bought some spyware and spam protection software based on those ratings. How do we know it isn't the very creators of the software rating themselves "highest"? It just gives me a bad feeling. "We Do The Research So You Don't Have To" -- sounds so very pat. Doesn't strike me as scientific.
Anybody?

Good question Keith
I guess the best I can offer is that you really can't believe all that you read - especially on the Internet
However, those reviews can lead you to explore different packages that you may not have been aware of.
I am certainly not advocating purchase of any software based on these reviews - just suggesting that (since download trials are available) that the information can be used as a guide to what packages to look at and perhaps trial.
In my experience, many reviews (especially from computer magazines) tend to be fairly superficial (who has the time to spend the in-depth time required to really analysise 10 packages with the features of VS9?), so you must take all this input with a large grain of salt and work out how you are going to form your own opinion before you outlay that very hard earned cash
Personally, especially these days with fast Internet access, I attempt to limit my examination to that software that I can "trial before I buy" i.e. if I can't get a demo/trial then I immediately strike it from my list of possibles - too many times in the past I have wasted good money on "advertised" features from the back of a box or based on reviews etc which did not live up to what I had been led to believe
