Converting Kodak Camera MOV Files to Mpeg2
I've seen many posts of persons attempting to convert the MOV files from
their Kodak cameras.
I've found a method to convert these files and would like to verify it
works before posting anything useful. Just because it works for me doesn't
mean it will work for others.
Anyone interested in trying this conversion please email me.
I would like to verify it actually works on other systems.

Between my 3 sons and myself we have 4 Kodak digital cameras so I am willing to give it a bash.

I would also be very interested to give it a go. I have quite a bit of footage that I would like to convert.

I am interested in the same. I tried to use Ulead Photo Explorer to trim and convert, but the audio and video went out of synch terribly. please send me your idea.

Kodak MOV files
I have many video clips from my Kodak digital camera that I am trying to use in VS9. I have tried the batch converter in tools - no luck. Have also tried the freeware TMPGEnc, too techy I guess. That didn't work either. Besides, I have lots of files to convert. Don't really want to do them one at a time. I'm open to any and all suggestion!! Please help!

Hello,
My apologizes to all. I haven't been monitoring this thread.
sjj1805,
I sent you an email to test your MOV files with a detailed explanation
of the procedure. Never heard back from you. Unless that wasn't you.
Please note my original post:
>>Anyone interested in trying this conversion please EMAIL ME.
>>I would like to verify it actually works on other systems.
Here is what I've found out so far with the Kodak cameras and MOV files from the people that "Emailed me" like I originally posted to do.
First, MOV files are "Containers" just like the AVI format.
A MOV file can be made from many choices of "Codecs".
The Kodak cameras don't use the SAME "Video Codec" in their cameras. If they did conversion would be alittle easier.
One model (like mine) can be using the H.263 video codec and later
models seem to be using the MPEG4 codec. Probably the MPEG4 is a better choice for all the newer portable devices coming on the market.
NIKON cameras use the Photo-Jpeg "Video Codec" which convert easily.
So you can see that there isn't an easy answer when someone says the word "MOV" because they must also know the format. Same as AVI video files.
There are 2 methods I've used. Working with the codecs directly which is hard or use the fast export feature of MF4. If using VideoStudio you must work with the codecs directly. The conversion process uses "Smart_Render" for the video portion to rewrite the new file. Working with the codecs directly is to lengthy to explain but the key with VideoStudio is to uncheck "Perform non-square pixel rendering" when exporting (that is exporting to the ORIGINAL Codec first). That will activate "Smart_Rendering". BUT, That depends on the framesize/aspect ratio AND the "Video_Codec".
..............................................................................................................................
This has been working for MovieFactory_4.
Simplest way to convert:
Load your MOV file in the timeline and make sure it plays.
Seek to the end of the video by hitting the END arrow navigator under the preview window.
In the "TIME" window click on the "Frames" Counter and using the down arrow "Subtract" about 2 frames.
Then hit the "Mark Out" Icon or the "F4" key (hotkey).
Click on the 3rd icon down and use the "FAST EXPORT VIDEO" choice.
Save the file giving it a unique name (for importing).
Delete the original file and load the new MOV file that you created by using the "Fast Export Video" feature.
The new MOV file now on the timeline can be converted to Mpeg format now.
............................................................................................................................
Also, Nero_7 converts them.
Remember when converted the converted (new) MOV file to a MPEG file that the original is "Frame_Based". So make the mpeg file the same.
The Frame_Size should be as close to the original as possible if converting for Dvd compliancy.
My Kodak uses 320x240 and I convert them to Mpeg1 or Mpeg2 352x240 at approx 1500kbs (still dvd compliant). Jumping upto a 720x480 isn't necessary with this type of file so check the properties of the original MOV file before conversion. Some cameras are 640x480 at 30fps which you would use either 352x480 or 704x480 or 720x480 (Frame_Based).
If someone is having trouble with this conversion then email me. (I will not email you first, so don't post your email in the forum unless you want others to view/know it).
Hope this helps,
ps - If all fails then MOV on

VideoStudio 9 MOV Conversion:
VideoStudio 9 uses a different process in comparision to MovieFactory_4 for conversion of MOV file to Mpeg compression.
Load the MOV file into the Timeline.
Right_Click on the MOV file and write down ALL the properties of the MOV file. You must "Duplicate" this MOV file using VideoStudio.
You cannot change any of the parameters of the original file. Most of these files are written in the steaming format and need to be rewritten in order for VS to process them into Mpeg files.
Goto Share-> Create Video Files -> Custom
Under the "Custom" settings make absolutely sure to create a MOV file with the exact parameters as the original source file. You CANNOT combine 2 MOV files together.
Make sure to only import one MOV file at a time. (Combining can be accomplished with the mpeg files).
Under "Custom" ->file_extension=mov -> Options
Options Screen has 4 tabs.
The first Tab on the left says "Ulead VideoStudio"
In that Tab the option "Perform Non-Square Pixel Rendering" determines whether VS will smart-render or re-render the video.
UN-Check this box.
Check ON "Perform Smart Render"
Go to the "Compression" Tab and assign the correct MOV CODEC FIRST. Then click on the "Audio" icon and assign the correct AUDIO CODEC along with the proper "Sampling Frequency" & "Bit_Depth" & Mono or Stereo.
Then tab through ALL other settings and assign the exact same parameters as the source video, frame_rate, frame_size, frame_based etc.
Make sure to switch between tabs and verify the settings. Sometimes changing one setting can affect a setting in another tab.
When writing the new Mov file the process should take seconds (very fast).
Remove the old file from the timeline and import the new file created by VS. Make sure the new Mov file plays in the timeline. It must play.
Then render that out to a mpeg file. During the rendering process of conversion from mov to mpeg you should be able to view the frames being processed. This will let you know the conversion is working properly.
............................................................................................................................................
Experienced VideoStudio Users:
If you have success with this then as an experiement/knowledge base repeat the process using the original file and
check ON the "Perform non-square pixel rendering". You will then see the file NOT being smart-rendered
which will tell you immediately the file conversion will not work. After you have converted a few mov files
you will back able to tell it it's working because exporting to a new Mov file goes very fast (seconds).
Re-rendereing goes very slow and file conversion will fail.
..................................................................................................................................
PS- Remember when exporting the original file to another Mov file to set the frame_rate, frame_size, frame_based, audio sampling & bit_depth and mono or stereo to the exact SAME. ALL the parameters must match for the smartrendering process to work properly.
Under the "Advanced" Tab "Target Playback drive can be left to "Custom". Depending on the Codec involved Key_Frames can be left
at the default of 24.
The KEY to conversion of these files with VideoStudio or MovieFactory is to create a new MOV file that ulead can interpret AND the file must be created using the smart_rendering feature.
When done properly conversion is extremely fast.
Anyone have a MOV file that they can't convert send it to me via email. I'll convert it and send it back if it can be converted.
