One reason I've upgraded twice in the past year has been to provide financial fuel to Ulead to improve the program. And one specific area I would like to see improved is in CONSISTENCY BETWEEN MODULES... I get the feeling different modules were written by different people with no style guidelines to give us users some consitent behavior and expectations. I feel this can affect the learning curve, and also causes exasperation in the workflow later on, when one becomes a power user, at least in a speciality.
A good example is the HUE AND SATURATION module. Why does it insist on having the PREVIEW CHECKBOX checked each time I open it? I'd like to turn that OFF and LEAVE IT OFF. That's my preferred way to use it. Many other modules (such as HIGHLIGHT MIDTONE SHADOW) seem to be able to remember the state I've chosen - at least during a session, if not the next time I open PhotoImpact.
Actually, some modules remember STATE across sessions, and some don't, through PREFERENCES or OPTIONS, or just autromatically. It would be great to have CONSISTENCY (I would argue that every module should remember the user's choices for workflow reasons, and maybe have a RESET to DEFAULT for newbies).
Another example is that some modules' interfaces RESIZE dynamically and others don't - though it would be just as useful for them as for the others that DO allow this benefit... And speaking of resizing: I'd sure like larger HISTOGRAMS sometimes. The size hardcoded in may be fine for 800x600 but it's only marginally sufficient at 1600x1200 on 19" screen. Actually I even found them a trifle small in some modules' interfaces at 1280x1024 or whatever. When I resize one of those interfaces to fill a large area of the screen partly why I'd like to see more is to see more detail in the HISTOGRAM - that's why we analyze data that way, after all.
Histograms are becoming more prominent than light meters to digital photographers these days, and I think their utility in image processing is similarly beneficial.
...Anyway, strip the rant from this post, and you still have the fact that I'd like to see the CHECKMARK in the Hue/Sat interface STAY TURNED OFF until I turn it back on. I'm trying to get some WORK done here! ; }
