Video Studio 9, JVC Everio Cams and .MOD files

Post by Lymers »

Apologies if this has been covered before, new boy !

Am I correct in assuming VS will not directly import the .MOD files that these fab camcorders output and that the only way I can use this with VS9 is to manually rename every file from .MOD to .MPG ?

use this http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php?acti...ic=280.0;id=153
You can use it to convert the mod files from the Panasonic or JVC tapeless camcorders to standard mpeg2 files.

its fab and renames all the files at once

Kitty -- you may need to actually tell us the name of the program. The link you provided is to a discussion forum, not a link to a program. The program is probably mentioned in one of the many threads in the many different forums listed on the page... but I am not sure anyone will have time to plough through them.

VS10 recognizes .mod files

Post by KimES »

One of my cameras is also a JVC Enverio - and it's one of the reasons I selected VS10+ as a video editor.

The .mod files from the JVC cameras are mpeg2. Why JVC (and some others) chose to call or 'set' the recordings with that extention I can't explain, but have read plenty of user comments on lots of webpages and forums complaining about it. I've found the following works:

1) You can import the .mod files directly into VS10+ (File > Insert Media into Timeline > Insert Video). VS10 responds favorably and even burns them to DVD using mpeg format settings, glitch free.

2) I have a habit of renaming the .mod extention to .mpg so I can play raw video through Windows Media Player for a "preview" before doing any editing. However, whether you insert the files into VS as .mod or .mpg has not made a difference in video or DVD rendering time or quality for me. (If it does, it's so small I can't tell.)

3) I'm using a free download called File Renamer from the following page:
http://www.webxpace.net/software/software.shtml

It works well for me and allows you to "mass-rename" any files, folders, etc of your chosing (not just .mod files). You can of course simply rename them through Windows Explorer or My Computer by right clicking and changing the extention, but doing that individually for several files at a time is tedious and a time-waster.

Try this link for the sdcopy tool...

I use sdcopy all the time for importing files from my JVC Everio. It renames files to Date_time_usertitle format and lets you preview with thumbnails. Even corrects the 16:9 flag on import.
