Is there a way in VS 9 to listen to the music and hit a key as you hear a beat to insert where you want to place a transition? Or can VS do this automatically?
Any help would be appreciated

As far as I am aware this option isnt built into VS9.
You can do it with ProShow Gold
http://www.photodex.com/products/proshow/
Build your slideshow and save it as an MPEG file then import it into VS9 or burn it with DVDWS2 or DVDMF4
