Does VS9 support Dolby Digital from DVDs?
I have about 30 DVDs which I made from tapes which have the audio encoded as Dolby Digital.
I am considering buying VS9, but I have to know if it supports importing from DVDs with Dolby Digital audio.
I've tried VS8 but that doesn't work.
Be grateful for any input.
Thanks.

Some people have had difficulties with it, but it is not clear if that is the fault of VS9 or because of some particular aspect of their computer set-up or the capture steps they have taken. But basically, the answer is yes -- VS9 can handle it. I have done it, if not regularly, then at least enough times -- all of them successful -- to know that it does work. There is one further caveat, however. VS9 will read 5.1 audio as only two channel AC-3 stereo, and it can only itself produce two channel stereo AC-3. VS8 could only handle AC-3 with a relatively expensive plug-in.

Yes. AC3 = Dolby Digital.
There's another issue... The free trial version does not have Dolby AC3.
...I assume that Dolby won't allow ANY free use of their technology.
Given the problems some users have had importing DVDs, if may not be worth the risk if that's the only reason you have for upgrading to VS9. On the other hand, you may have to take a risk with somebody's software, and it's only a $50 gamble to upgrade to VS9.

Dolby yes, 5.1 no
I've checked that, because my Handycam records 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. The answer is - yes, VS9 inputs Dolby Digital correctly and outputs it, too, but you loose the 6 channel information. It comes out as DD 2.0. If that's all you need you're fine. If not, you need to look into MediaStudio 8.

If you mean the Ulead AC-3 plug-in, then that costs US$29.95 if it is still available. It would be better to spend an extra $20 and upgrade to VS9. If you mean a free AC-3 filter, then the most these can do is allow you to import AC-3 audio. But they won't allow you to output it -- you have to first convert the audio to another format.

I have actually invested in vs9 now as suggested, although, to my horror, it doesn't allow my DivX codec to be used for capture, which vs8 will.
Further, despite enabling popups, I have failed to download the MPEG-4 plug-in and I'm only allowed 5 attempts.
What do I do now? - I'm feeling a little disenchanted.
