Video doesn't fit on DVD after joining videos

Post by Tyou »

I have two MPEG2 files encoded by Canopus Procoder, each 2.1 GB large.
These two files fit on one DVD. When I choose to join the files, the project grows with 500 MB en doesn't fit on one DVD anymore.

The template I used is 4.7 GB, 120 minutes and the two files are each 60 minutes.

What is the reason of this file growth when joining video files?

I don't know what's wrong with the template, but I've always assumed it's just an estimate of playing time.

Try checking the box that says Do Not convert Compliant MPEG Files.

Are you changing audio formats? For example going from MPEG-2 audio (which is not compliant for NTSC DVDs) to LPCM could account for a 500MB increase.

Try the Fit To Disc option.

Try manually selecting a lower bitrate. Here's a bitrate calculator.

If all else fails, DVDshrink (FREE!!!) usually works.

The box "Do not convert complian MPEG files" is checked. I unchecked it en checked it again. No result.

The audio format of the original files is MPEG2, 224 kbps and that is the same audio format as chosen in the disc template.

The original files take 4.3 GB space on the disc. After joining the video segments, it takes 5.2 GB, that's very strange.

I have buyed high quality components for capturing the analog video and converting the material to MPEG2 files. Now I don't want to reduce the quality by using programs as DVDShrink. I know the program works fine, but it reduces the quality.

I got the same problem too. (The picture below)

I convert file from Dat to Mpeg with Vcdgear the file size is about 1 GB.

After I add files to my template in Movie Factory, it show my file is 5 GB. Ho my god.

What's wrong with it? I think this is surely a big bug that even the developer didn't know?

Please fix this problem quickly

Uleads editing seems to do strange things the the resultant file.

Try exporting (icon to the left of the timeline) the clip, delete it and then import the exported clip in it's place. Complete the project and burn it.

When you Join 2 videos together having the "Do Not Convert" choice goes out the window. A new mpeg2 file must be created when you join the 2 videos.
The new calculation is based on the "Project Settings".

Your file is most likely coming out large because the Max_Video_Bit_Rate is NOT the Average_Video_Bit_Rate of the videos you've made.
So when your looking at the properties of the source material your seeing the Max_Bit_Rate and not the true Average_Bit_Rate that will determine the size of the video file.
No program knows the true Average_Bit_Rate unless the program analysis the video.
My Sony unit & Panasonic units record at approx 4800kbs video_bit_rate. The mpeg2 videos are marked as around 9100 or higher.

When you use other programs to record or convert your videos other than Uleads encoder you must know the actual video average bit rate. Use a software player to view the actual bit-rate "Power_dvd" will show the average bit-rate of a mpeg2 file when playing.

The Mpeg1 file shown above is 98 minutes. Depending on what dvd template your using MF will estimate that. That would be your "Project Property Settings".
If you choose a template of 8000kbs with LPCM audio you can only get 1 hour of video on a dvd. So a 98 minute video using that template would be between 5 and 6 gig. Create a custom template of about 4500kbs using Dolby Audio @ 192 or 256kbs. Create a custom template(s), then apply it as your project settings.
Look at the bottom of the page you posted. It says " 1 hour 38 minutes" etc. (Change your project Properties).

Note: When you can use the "Fast Export" feature of MF4 the "Fast Export" feature exports the video AS IS if it can do it such as a standard mpeg file. It's using smart-render to do this and isn't re-rendering the video.
If you import a non-dvd-compliant file such as a mpeg2 640x480 frame size, trim it and use the "Fast-Export" feature the new file will still be 640x480 framesize.

Hope this helps,

Thank you everyone
I knew the problem right now. After a lot of tried I found that the MF doesn't notice you when you add a mpeg files that not compatable with dvd format.

And if I didn't check the box "Do not convert...", the programs will canculate my file by the time duration of the movies.(my movie is 90 min, the dvd is 120 min. 120-90 = 30)

But if I check the box "Do not convert...", the programs will canculate my file by the size of the movie. but when I write it to dvd disc or Iso file and then play, the picture of the movie will became mosaic.

This because my movie file is not compatable with the dvd format.

So my solution is first I use the programs that fix the GOP like "TMPGEnc or Wormble mpeg wizard" and then add to the template again.

Check box "Do not convert..." set aspcet ratio and TVsystem same as the movies file (for my file is PAL, 320*288) frame ratio at constant 1150 or 2000 depend on the size on dvd disc and don't use the various frame ratio because the quality of the pictures will poor not like the orginal files.

If anyone have any suggestion please tell it, for the other people to know.
Thank you
