DMA to PIO?

Post by John O. »

I have a question for computer experts, or others who have faced the same procedure: I want to update the firmware for my Sony DVD burner. Sony's procedure calls for disabling DMA setting in Winsows before executing the update. My computer's system configuration (XP Pro) lists two Primary and two Secondary IDE Channel Controllers, each including a Device 0 and a Device 1. All are active, but I cannot tell what each controls.

The setting choices for each of these 8 controllers are Transfer Mode from "DMA if available" or "PIO only".

My questions are: Should I change all 8 settings from DMA to PIO, and can this screw anything up in computer functionality while performing the update? (I am a little chicken about making changes in unknown territory)

Thanks, John

In device manager goto menu view. Select view devices by connection. Navigate to your controller (PC/PCI...). Now you will see where your device is connected.

Thanks, Helge, I completely missed that option. I did find the answer by looking into the computer Bios setup, but your suggestion is of course the logical one!
