WindowsXP SP1
Capture Device Canopus ADVC 300
MSP7 works fine - no problems
Trying out MSP8 and it is capturing the video but there is no picture in the preview and no sound.
At start up, picture appears for a second and there is a sound blip and that's it.
Any thoughts
No preview available in MSP8 video capture
I remember seeing this once with my ADVC-100 but, I'm sorry, I can't for the life of me remember what I did to get it working again. I vaguely seem to think I set VC up for a different input and then went back again to the right settings. What do you see when you hit MS1394 Device Control in the Device Control box and then hit the Options button? If you don't see Unknown Device and have it selected, then VC isn't seeing your ADVC. I assume you have the correct Direct Show Capture Plug-in selected. If you switch off the ADVC, does it beep with a warning? On switching it on again, it should ask you whether you want to use the device.
Sorry can't be more specific.

Seems to be a little bit random if preview is shown during capturing or not.
As I last captured from my Sony DCR-PC110E I had selected some clips to capture in the scanning dialog. During capturing the first clips no preview was shown. I first thought I had not set the option show in preview during capturing. But I didnt wont to restart, so I let it run (I can watch the video also on the screen of the camcorder). I was surprised that after some clips the video was suddenly shown in the preview window. But after that clip with the start of the next one the camcoder positioned a few times forward / backward, showed the first few frames of the next clip and then the preview window was again dark. May be that the capture module discovered some performance problems due to the positioning and decided to switch of preview to improve performance. After capturing finished, I checked the preview option. It was set. As far as I remember I never heart sound during capturing (except from the camcorder).

I'm puzzled by this. Normally it shows whatever is connected to the IEEE-1394 ports. For example, in my case, it displays "Unknown Device" for the ADVC and "SONY" for my DVCAM drive.DB83 wrote: Device control defaults to MS1394 and when I hit options it says 'Unknown' at the top and a whole load of different numbers in selection boxes.
Unfortunately, you have not filled in the requested hardware details in your profile, so I can't see what your set-up is. Are you trying to transfer your DV data from the ADVC to an IEEE-1394 drive? I've heard that this can cause problems because the interface has to constantly switch between input and output and it may be that the computer cannot cope with these commands and display. I do know that the Capture module does adjust its display capabilities as "last priority"; for example, if I transfer DV data to AVI, the display is perfect but if I transcode to MPG, it will display roughly 2x/second to 1x/second, depending on the settings. This is to give the best chances to the integrity of the capture, rather than simple previewing, which is less important.

I do not think the hardware profile is important here as this system performed perfectly well with MSP7 - and still does with MSP8 installed which makes me think the problem lies with MSP8.
If you are interested it's a P4 2.4 with 512mb of DDR ram and an intel chip MB (gigabyte)
The setup is very simple. Input to the ADVC 300 is an analogue VCR - the ADVC 300 was chosen for it's time-base correction facilities and has proved it's capabilities - the DV cable from the ADVC goes straight into a 1394 port on the PC.
The Video Card is a Matrox Marvel G450 but the capture element is not being used.
As you have correctly pointed out, if I capture (under MSP7) as DV I get a smooth picture preview whereas under MPEG I only get certain frames. This is not important since as long as I can see what I am capturing then I can contol it accurately.
MSP8 is capturing the video coming through the ADVC but for the life of me I can not understand why it is not being displayed in the preview screen. Unless of course Ulead have changed their display method and it is incompatable with this video card.

For the record the program is fully working now.
The villians of the piece were the Video Drivers. Although these had been installed when I was capturing using the Matrox device sometime ago I found myself having to re-install everyting (HD failure).
I was no longer using the Matrox for capture - doing DV capture through the Canopus - and this worked fine for me using MSP7 and the default drivers from the XP installation.
Once I had re-installed the correct drivers MSP8 capture with full sound and video preview is fine.
