vhs transfer to dvd not sizing correctly

My burned vhs tapes to dvd are a square inside my television screen. I want them to be the total screen size. I'm transfering with sony hc85 set on 16:9. Burning is no problem by following the procedures set up by this forum. I make a file first, check that my burn properties are the same as my project properties, and burn a dvd without any problems. When I play it on the tv, I get a box on my tv screen that is much smaller that the screen itself. Is there a way to get the pjicture to fill the whole tv screen? Thanks for your help.
