studio 9 closes while burning dvd

Post by malcolmj »

I just installed Studio 9 and captured about 18 GB of video in AVI format in 2 different projects. I first burned one of the projects to DVD, about 1.3 GB and it worked perfectly. The next day I decided to add the other project of about 2 GB to the dvd (a DVD+RW). I noticed beforehand that when I tried to open the avi files in windows movie maker, that WMM would immediately close as soon as I tried to open the folder containing the files. When I tried to burn the 2 projects using Ulead, they opened properly but about 1 1/2 hours into the burn, the program closed and left me at the windows desktop with no programs running. I tried it again with the same result. Now I notice that other programs that access the same folder either close immediately or close after accessing the video files. I tried to go to a restore point before this happed and could not get a restore. Has anybody some idea of what is happening?

Hi Malcolmj,

This is certainly one possiblity as I had the same things happen to me recently. I would be working on a project and VS9 would exit stage left, no errors, no warnings just gone. Then It started occuring while using other programs.
My problems however was related to a bad memory stick. I did finally receive some memory errors. Most of the time the programs would just close, and sometimes my computer would reboot, not always. The behavior was erratic and hard to pin down as to what was causing it. I finally ran a Memory test and found that one stick was bad. I replaced the stick and have not experienced it since. Oh and the memory stick was only 6 months old.

This may not be your situation, however checking it wouldn't hurt..

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't use a memory stick but I did a Norton on my system and it found no problems.

  'Memory stick' is the usual way of saying 'a stick of RAM' -- in other words, your computer definitely has at least one 'memory stick' and possibly more. And Nortons does not test the RAM -- you need a specialised program for it, though there are some freeware ones, including one you can download from Microsoft...

video studio 9 closes while burning

An update on this posting. I did run a ram test using windows download and it was ok. Then I moved all of the video files to a new, dummy folder and attempted to open them in WMM. Of the 5 clips, one of them caused an immediate shutdown of the program. I deleted this clip, moved them back to the original folder and everything worked. I must say that Ulead seems very fragile. Today I captured some more clips. After 15 minutes of capture, I got an error message saying that the clip was corrupted and would be deleted automatically. I rebooted Ulead and did the same clip again. This time it worked. ????

I appreciated the ecucation on the Memory Stick. Had seen that but didn't know what it meant.
