Using:
Videostudio 6
Sharp digital viewcam VL-NZ100
Setting to capture: default settings for UK.
Format: MPEG
Driver: SHARP-M
I've captured 1 hour's video. I noticed the scene detection option was ticked, but faded out and unable to be clicked on. Now it's captured, the hour is not split into scenes and when I right click in library, split by scene is not an option.
Please can you help explain what I have done wrong, or can do to rectify the problem? Many thanks.

Hi Rowena,
These questions and answers are based on my knowledge with VS5, 8 and 9. I've never used VS6 so I'm not familiar with the interface or it's designed workflow.
How did you capture your video, the composite (audio/video) cables or Firewire (IEEE1394)?
I've done a search on Sharp's website and came up with the manual for the VL-NZ100U, which does have a Firewire port. If this is your model, then it is better to capture using Firewire.
Why are you capturing to MPEG and what MPEG format? Are you going to do any editing? DV-AVI is the recommended format to capture to if you plan on doing any editing.
Did you have a clip in the timeline highlighted when you tried to use the Split by Scene or in the Library?
Regards

Prob splitting scenes
Hi Ron,
Thanks for the reply.
1. I used firewire to capture.
2. Re why MPEG? This came up automatically and I read in the manual that MPEG was a good idea to prevent having to convert later. Plus it's a smaller size for hard disk (not that I'm bothered about that).
3. Yes I am going to edit. Does it mean I can't now I've captured in MPEG?
4. Yes, I did have a clip highlighted when I tried to split by scene.
Look forward to hearing form you.
Rowena.

Rowena,
You can edit MPEG, however you may experience Out Of Sync issues, where the audio is not in sync with the video. This can occur even when editing MPEG in the current VS9 version.
I noticed that you are using the Sharp M capture driver. I finally located and downloaded and read through the VS6 Manual. It states that you should use the DirectShow capture driver. This maybe why you don't have access to the split by scene. VS uses that driver for capturing DV.
See if you can change the capture driver to Direct Show. Then try capturing a small clip, and selecting split by scene. If the results are the same then we have eliminated that as the problem.
