Indeo Codec
When I try to play an MPEG2 created in VS9 I get a codec error. I presume that this will be the Indeo codec that comes installed with VS9.
The trouble is I have downloaded the Indeo 5.11 twice from two different sources, and during installing both hang my pc whuke "searching for Netscape".
Does anyone know of this problem, know how I can get around it or tell me where to get a "good" version.
Thanks.

I don't think the problem is with the Indeo codec, which is required to play certain animated clips. It is more likely with your mpeg-2 codec (or lack or corruption thereof)... There's no point in checking XP's device manager, as it will not tell you much. First, check in VS9 itself: Tools > Product Codec Information. If this does not show MPEG-2 Full, you may need to reinstall the program. Or you could do a google search for a freeware product called Gspot or another called Sherlock, which gives a detailed breakdown on all the audio and video codecs you have on your computer...

When installing the indeo codec installation program that comes with
VS9 it seems to be simple.
The other bigger / downloaded indeo program installations IF INTERRUPTED can corrupt the harddisks.
If your loading an mpeg2 file and receive an error it's in the mpeg codec.
Could be your source file/material mpeg2 file is corrupt.
VS uses the indeo codec for the sample files in the library etc.
Scandisk your drives for errors and re-install VS9.
If you still get the mpeg error look at the source file your importing.

Thank you.
From your answers I'm led to wonder if I explained the situation correctly, so I'll try again.
I have created two Mpeg2 files - one from a DivX file and another from a RealMedia file (converted to Mpeg using Boilsoft RealMedia Converter) on computer 'a'. The clip plays perfectly in Windows Media Player on that computer.
When trying to play the same clips on computer 'b' (no VS9 installed) WMPlayer looks for a codec, says "Error downloading codec / One or more codecs appear to be missing".
Are you saying that the problem is within the file that I created but that the problem is only recognised once I try and play the file outside of the environment that created it?
Aha........!
Just as I was about to submit this post I remembered the "Plays What Others Won't" VideoLAN player: I just checked and VideoLAN plays both clips correctly.
(Out of curiosity I tried importing the created clips into MovieMaker and it says a codec is missing.)
The panic, now that I can play the clips wherever I choose, is over, but the mystery remains.
And the other thing: is there any way to make VS9 accept and work with RealVideo without having to convert it first?

It simply means as it says (I guess!!
) It has nothing to do with your clip, per se. Computer b simply does not have the codec installed on it to play the clip (particularly if computer b does not have VS installed on it).
As for your Real problem, I can't comment. I will probably sound snobbish, but don't mean to, when I say I refuse to allow Real of any flavour anywhere near my computers these days. Too invasive.

Hi Ken
Well, with VideoLAN player the problem is no longer a problem.
About Real Media: are you saying that their players and such are full of 'ware' and other sundry maliciousness?
I use a player called RealAlternative and as far as I know (ha ha) don't have any Real programs installed. But please tell me if there's stuff - hidden or whatever - that I should look out for.
I have a whole bunch of Real clips that need to be dealt with and I'd like to avoid converting them, but it's no big deal.
By the way: most impressed with your Spanish (that I saw in another thread). Did you learn it "from a booock" as Fawlty Towers' Manuel used to say, or were you here?
Regards.

Not sure of where 'here' is as far as you are concerned,
, but I was, once upon a time, Australian Ambassador to Chile, Peru and Bolivia. And I learned my Spanish first here in Canberra, Australia (with a mainland Spanish teacher!!) and then in an excellent school in Quito, Ecuador. After that, I was in charge of our Embassy (though not Ambassador) in Caracas, before going on as Ambassador to Santiago de Chile. So I guess I have a fairly wide exposure to Latin American Spanish. Unfortunately, during the many times I have visited peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands (about 24 times) I had not then learned Spanish, much less Catalan!! Anyway, thanks for the compliment.
As for Real, my aversion only relates to the 'ware' and the fact that once you installed the Real player, it sort of intruded on a lot of programs... Nothing else than that. Since then, I have just had this aversion, and don't even use RM media of any kind, though I know that this is a bit short-sighted of me, given the widespread occurrences of that format these days. So maybe one day I will find the Real Alternative program you mentioned. Thanks.

!J*d*er!
If I'd known all that I wouldn't have complimented you
I thought you were just some bloke who'd picked up a bit of the lingo inbetween necking San Miguel and noocking some painted bimbo in an Ibiza nightclub!
Should I call you 'Don' Ken?
I updated my profile: I'm on the Med coast.
(But I have a Portuguese keyboard so I can't do the upside-down '!')
Regards,
Nicholas

Agora me está a f*d*r a cabeça! Quantas linguas falas, meu? E ja agora, que tal este Português da rua, com palavrões e tudo! Pero não sou puto nenhum, embora falo como um gamberro do bairro: tenho 51 anos pero aprendí falar na rua com essos gamberros, and that stuff sticks, I can tell you.
Viví durante cuatro anos em Espanha no princípio dos 80, em Cadiz, pero uma vez que fiz uma visita a Lisboa - em 85 creio eu - fiquei enamorado com a gente e fui lá viver. Fiquei durante 18 anos.
And I've been in Spain for two years, and no, I'm not going to write in Spanish. I speak reasonably well although my grammar is sorely lacking (in grammar, mostly), read well, and don't write well at all.
Are you connected to Ulead in some way? Your presence makes itself felt in this Forum and your knowledge seems ..... oh, I don't know ..... What a joke: I speak three languages and I can't finish a simple sentence.
So, you speak 'Iberian' and Australian (that's some kind of poor mans' English, isn't it, like 'American English'?) Arabic? Any Slavic tongues? Mandarin?

I'm pleased to hear that a Filipino language still exists: that they haven't all been forced to speak 'American' is a wonder.
Russian: always had a hankering after that. There are large Russian and Ukranian communities both here and in Portugal and it's always a pleasure to hear them.
I went to Bucarest and everybody speaks English: much more than here.
Alas, the Old dogs/New tricks cliché is very much alive and well as far as I'm concerned: learning another language is probably now beyond me, which is a shame as the nearness of the charms of Morroco is tantalising.
É a vida.
Um saludo e hasta la proxima.
