I am converting VHS tapes to DVD, but after capturing and during playback, there is no sound. The sound works perfectly when playing a VHS casette, but when I start to capture, the sound is gone. The sound level bars also indicate that no sound is being recorded. What am I doing wrong? It is driving me nuts.

...and it will drive us nuts too unless you give us some further information.
How exactly are you capturing from the VHS source? What capture device are you using and how exactly is it connected to the VHS device at one end and the computer at the other? Does the capture device have a separate audio line-out to connect to your computer's LINE-IN jack? What format are you capturing in. What are your computer specs and OS?

My capturing format is MPEG2, PAL, Lower Field First. I vary the bit rate but it ends up at 4000bps. By the way, what is the difference between capturing to MPEG2, DVD or AVI? Which is the best for VHS tapes or DV capturing?
I made sure that Line-in is selected on the sound device.

Coincidentally, I also have a Winfast TV2000 capture card and find it excellent. But I also have no problem capturing audio as well as the video!! I begin to suspect a reason why you can't, though...
You say your VCR is connected via "a normal co-axial cable" -- this is a relatively opaque description since there are a myriad types of co-axial cables out there. But is the one you are talking about: black and with round plugs at either end, one with a solid plastic filling with about 5 tiny oval holes in it, and at the other end, a metal jacket surround five pins or so? If so, it is the S-video plug, and this, as its name implies, only carries the video signal. You also need to connect the red and white (or black) RCA plugs between the VCR audio out and the little adaptor plug which comes with the TV2000 (in my case, its a dark, transparent blue). It is a little confusing as it has a plug at one end which takes both the RCA and S-video plug, but goes into one cable and ends with a round black plug which plugs into the capture card itself on the back of the computer and looks like a female S-video plug, but in reality also accepts the audio signal from the RCA plugs...

Hi Ken.
Problem is sorted. The cable was not the problem. In desparation I looked at VOLUME CONTROL, PROPERTIES. I selected recording and this is where the problem lies. LINE IN was selected. When selecting AUX the sound returned. Thanks for your guidance!!!!
Capturing to MPEG 2, AVI or DVD - what is the difference between these formats?
