SmartSound: are any files included with boxed VideoStudio9 ?

Post by rhungent »

I am fiddling with SmartSound to add to my home movies.
I can see the various themes and sounds available, but each clip is a
downloaded sample that costs $6.95/sound if I want to use it.

Does VideoStudio 9 come with any included Sound clips or do
you have to buy them if you want any of them??

(Rhetorical question) With iTunes selling songs for $0.99, why/how can
they charge $6.95 per song
Has anyone here on this board purchased songs and how many songs have you purchased total.

Thanks for any replies

Yes, VS9 comes with a bunch of SmartSound themes - about 20 or so - and each one has several different variations of each particular theme.

I believe the cost of the SmartSound songs is far more than, say, iTunes because SmartSound is royalty free. That means you could use a SmartSound song in your video and sell it, and not owe SmartSound any royalties. If you want to sell your video that has a Rolling Stones song on it that you purchased from iTunes you are breaking the law, unless you struck a deal to pay the band, record company, lawyers, managers, roadies, etc. for use of the song.

SmartSound songs are of good quality and work well, although if you use them quite often you'll get tired of using the same ones pretty quickly. But as you've seen you can purchase more.

The technology involved in producing SmartSound songs is also quite different and rather more sophisticated (though to me it sounds essentially -- and unacceptably -- too electronic). You can use a SmartSound theme which will in effect adapt itself to meet exactly the length of the clip you are attaching it to -- normal background music from whatever other source, including iPod cannot do this. So SmartSound of course charges a premium.

My installation did not have and QuickTracks.
Under Scope: there is nothing under local/mounted/owned,
but the "all" opens all the Library titles and Music titles, yet
I do not have any included files. Are they separate on the
Bonus CD, because I just don't see them.

Thanks, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this forum.

On disk 1 of the 2 disk boxed set the installer and the library are located at

x:\Program\UVS9\SmartSound\Quicktracks.exe
Where x is your CD/DVD drive letter.

It is the later version of Quicktime which causes the problem. You can do a search for Quicktime on this Board, and that will provide the details. But briefly, you have to uninstall SmartSound AND Quicktime (IIRC), and then go to the SmartSound website, where they have an update to make it acceptable to the recent version of Quicktime. Then reinstall with the patch, and reinstall the latest version of Quicktime. But as I say, do a Search as I am going by memory, and I could have gotten the steps a little wrong...

Thanks for the input.
I found out that SmartSound doesn't always install flawlessly like VS9. There is a total of 26 songs. My friend was only able to get 16 songs, because there were some -errors- on the others. Another friend had a clean installation. I realized that I could copy some files and move them to my computer.

1. I had to copy the music files into the music folder in c:/programfiles/smartsound

AND

2. had to copy the "library" file in the c:/user?.../All user/application data/smartsound/library

I think I would have had an easier time just running the .exe file that you mentioned.

G'day All,

I'm having the same problem with Smartsound Quicktracts as well. The installer is popping up everytime I or anyone else enters their profile I'll post a link to another thread so you can view the captures I had. I think the young fellas might have downloaded a new version of quicktime or something. I've also had problems with the flash animation and VS9 hanging and shutting down when I try to preveiw. Given these 2 problems I'm just wondering if I should reinstall or whether I should just try and fix the problems independently. I've searched through the archives regarding the flash problem as well as this fairly new problem with the Smartsound issue. Since I installed VS9, I've uninstalled VS7 so I'm wondering if I'm going to have to reinstall the origional verson of VS, can't even remember the version that came boxed with my origional sony burner 3yrs ago, and then install VS7 upgrade and then go to VS9 upgrade?

If you have a disc of the older version then you don't have to reinstall that before reinstalling version 9, just put the older version in your cd tray so the new version can "see" it.

Just an update: followed the uninstallation procedure outlined on the Smartsound website and reinstalled. Fired up VS9 and tried the Automusic and it didn't work. Sine I was having problems with the flash animation as well I uninstalled VS9, saving the smart downloads and had to go right back to my initial version of VS4, then upgrade to VS7 and finally VS9 as VS9 wouldn't accept the upgrade disc as a legitimate version. It also wouldn't accept VS4 alone as you need to have VS5 or higher. That didn't propose any real problems though as i just had to update VS4>VS7 and then finally VS9, then install all the smart downloads. One thing I am interested in though is if I uninstall VS4 and VS7 will programs be uninstalled that VS9 needs to operate without bugs?

Cheers,
Max
