windows protected, shuts down

I bought a DVD burner and was playing with it last night for 7 hours and couldn't get a dvd burnt. I have Windows ME and Movie Factory 4 SE. I Was attempting to burn straight to disk. It started out by saying the disk would be formated before writing the disk started spinning the the screen went down with the message windows in protected mode you need to restart your computer?? What happened?
