Source playback vs. Preview - Instant Play

Post by patc »

My question is related to the topic as stated. Source playback vs. Preview - Instant Play. I notice when I import an mpeg I had created into Video Editor that I can playback the video fine through the preview window but if I try and play it in the source window it's very choppy.

Does anyone know why this might be? Is there a setting I am missing?

Also, I've been trying to get it so I can use the capture program instead of Pixela and have not been succesful getting it to capture right. Any steps I can try and insight there would be helpful as well.

Here are my video and project settings:

My source is a Sony DCR DVD-100 and the file is created using the Pixela software that comes with it (yes I know it bites  ). This process creates a file with these attributes:

.mpg
Vid Format: 24bits, (704x480),4:3
compression: NTSC DVD, Upper field first, Variable bit rate (max 9300 kbps)
comp Ratio: 6%
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps
Total Frames: 24,066

Audio: Dolby Digital AUdio 48000 hz

The project is set up to match (smart check revealed no problems that needed conversion).

Your project settings should be 480, not 490,, although this may be a typo. Has your disk been finalised?

Yes, it was a typo (480) and the file is on my pc not a disk so no finalization would apply here.

It occurs when I import the mpg file into Video Editor.

If I use the edit command on the video clip and the source window opens with the editing tool, the video playback is very choppy. If I take the video directly to the timeline and do an Instant playback set at the highest wuality, it plays back fine.

It's probably just that (quality setting) but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my program since I am having another issue with the video capture program that I outlined in another post regarding frame rate settings.

Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure what you are meaning. If you take the file onto the timeline and double-click it, does it still play "choppily"? When you take it on the timeline, do the green and yellow lines appear showing that the file has the same settings as the project?

Have you tried importing it from the camera's DVD with Video Capture, using your computer's DVD drive? I'm always a wee bittie apprehensive with mixing software in MPEG as there are hundreds of flags that can be set by one, that aren't appreciated by others. All NLE software can be a little fussy about this.

By choppy I mean that the Video portion of the file hesitates for a few frames awhile the audio continues to play and then the video comes back right in sync.

The green line is showing above the timeline and yes I am in the process of trying to capture from my DVD-vr formatted disk and that did seem to work okay, I am right now in the process of testing the captured file in the video editor program.

I am seeing horizontal jerkyness when the image is panning in Instant preview so I rendered the movie and now it's really dark on preview. Neither of these conditions exist when I playback the original movie straight from the camera through my dvd player and it only got dark once I rendered it.

I haven't burned the captured test file yet to a dvd.

A couple of questions on settings:

What do these mean and should they be checked of on project settings:

Non square pixel
DVD-VR Compliant
Two Pass Encoding
