Jerky Video Playback And No Audio Using VideoStudio 8

Post by turtullus »

Hi, i've just bought the Ads Tech Video Xpress and VideoStudio is what has come with it for capturing purposes. Anyway, when i try to capture video everything seems fine, i have no problem playing it back after capturing it as long as i play it within the application. However, when i try to open the file in media player it is unplayable because it's so jerky. Also, when i try to capture from a freeview box i get the same problem with the video but the audio doesn't record at all, yet it plays when you see the preview before you press the capture button.

I've read the guides and done a bit of searching through this forum already but i'm totally new to this and not a lot of it makes sense to me. I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me out.

Thanks.

We need a fair amount of further information before being able to offer any firm advice. I don't know your capture device, but I am assuming that it does not capture to DV/AVI format, though it may capture to uncompressed AVI. More likely, it captures to mpeg format. But we need to know exactly what the properties are of the files you have captured. Right click on one of the captured files in VS8's library pane, and copy down the Properties and post them back here. Capturing to mpeg-2 will often produce jerky video if your computer is not powerful enough to carry out this very demanding process smoothly. However, the captured video would normally also appear jerky in the VS8 preview window, and not just in Windows Media Player or other third party players. Equally, if you have chosen a capture format (e.g. DV) which your capture device cannot service properly, you would get corrupt video, but again, this would not play properly either in VS8. So I am somewhat mystified.

Anyway, tell us exactly how you have your device connected to the computer; the format you have chosen in VS8 to capture in; the properties of the captured files; and something about your computer's specifications and operating system.

My capture device is the Ads Tech VideoXpress http://www.adstech.com/products/USBAV-1 ... BAV-191-EF

Anyway, after some more searching on this forum i tweaked some settings and the video jerkiness seems to have rectified itself somehow. However, i still have the no audio problem. This goes for capturing in any format other than WMV.

I have mainly been trying to capture in DVD format, here are the properties of one of the files i have tried to capture:
File Format: PAL DVD
File Size: 10,390kb
Duration: 13.360 Seconds

Video Type: MPEG-2 Video
Total Frames: 334 Frame(s)
Attributes: 24 Bits, 720x576, 4:3
Frame Rate: 25.000 Frames/Sec
Data Rate: 6000kbps

Audio Type: MPEG Audio Layer 2 Files
Total Samples: 641, 280 Samples
Attributes: 48000Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Layer: 2
Bit Rate: 256 kbps

The device is connected to a freeview box via a scart lead with composite cables which go into my capturing device which in turn plugs into my laptop via USB 2.0. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP2, 1.4Ghz, 256mb Ram, 40Gb HD.

As the video seems to working now i was wondering whether it might be that i need to install the AC-3 codec that i read about on here. I don't know though, you're the experts...i hope!!

I don't think the AC-3 plug-in for VS8 is relevant to your problem since you would not be capturing anything that used Dolby through your analogue device. And I am slightly confused about the properties you have set out there: were they the properties which appeared when you right-clicked on one of the captured files within VS8? Or are those the Project Properties? I ask because, naturally, the properties contain audio settings which are fairly normal ones, and it should play since the relevant audio codec is normally installed as part of the Video Studio installation process.

The only other thing that I can think of is that your ADS device looks very similar to a capture device I have (VGear Pocket DVD). It too has the S-Video and RCA in-connections, and connects to the computer via USB 2. When I first connected it, and also using VS8 at the time, I could not capture audio. But on looking around the side of the box, I discovered a little standard stereo plug, and by connecting a cable to that and to my LINE-IN connection on the computer, the audio suddenly was there. Yet there was no mention of this plug in the admittedly very brief instructions which came with the box. So just make sure there is no similar, unexplained plug on your ADS device...

I've actually managed to solve the problem. In the video and audio capture property settings the audio device was set as Conexant AMC Audio. I changed this to USB 2.0 Analog Audio Device and it works perfectly.

I'd just like to say thanks anyway for helping me out, i really appreciate it. :D
