I'm trying the trial of VS9 and it looks fantastic, but:
1/ The first avi I loaded and edited plays stop-motion when in Project mode so I don't see the transitions correctly and can't get a feel of the 'flow' of the edit. I loaded another avi (same source, quality and size) to the same timeline and it plays fine in project mode. Why might this be?
2/ The project I'm trying is made up of several separate files that will eventually be rendered as one: how can I work on file 'a', put it to one side (either finished or unfinished) and work on 'b', etc, then when each is finished put them all in the same project. Can I do this?
I've been browsing these forums quite a bit: you guys deserve a big thank you.

Hi Willydeluxe, welcome to the boards
Ron P.
- That is very common when previewing a project. Your computer seems up to the task, however when previewing a project it is putting together all your edits on the fly. It is simply a crude representation. Following the recomended procedures posted in the top sticky of ths forum will insure that you have few problems and a good result.
- There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. When you want to add project a to project b or vise versa, with one project in the timeline, just click on the folder located to the bottom left of the storyboard/timeline, select add video. Then navigate to project a.vsp and select it. It will then be loaded into your current project.
You can also render one project to an avi, go to Share-->Create Video and choose same as project settings. Then you can import it into your second project. Then you can render both projects into one...

I'm having a similar problem with cobbling together some .mov files I filmed with my digital camera. I've copied the files from the camera to the system, and they average less than 1 minute & ~4-8meg each (not very high quality, but hey, gotta film with what I've got). I've been using drag&drop to put the video clips into the timeline bar. From there, a preview of the "clip" plays normally, but of the "project" does not, its extremely choppy, playing maybe 4-5 frames over the course of a minute. The transitions are working o.k. I tried creating a .wmv and an mpeg-1 of the video, both have the same problem. I read something in the manual about needing to "finalize" a video before exporting it, but the index has nothing about how to "finalize" a video, and its not obvious in any of the menus. I've been creating the video files via the share tab. I purchased the software on reccomendation from a friend, they thought it would suit my needs for combining the homevideos from my camera into a single video that I can email or put on disc to send to relatives.
My system specs:
Athlon XP 2100
2gig DDR ram
nvidia geforce 6800 (128meg)
over 70gb free disk space on a Western Digital 120gb w/8meg cache
Based on the "USE RECCOMENDED..." post above, I may have some editing of preferences to do, but it seems like a strange problem to have out of the box. I'll edit this with the project settings when I get home later (at work now), they're basically the default except that I turned on auto-transitions for ease of use. My entire project up to the point of this problem is 2 static images, each with a title screen, back to back at the beginging (basically a overall title and a "chapter title" , though I havent done anything to designate any DVD "chapters"), with a single 1 minute video clip in .mov format following the 2 title screens. There is an arrow transition between the first two screens, and a page flip between the 2nd screen and my 1 minute video clip. Watching the "project", the title screens go by ok, as does the transition into the video, but once it's at the video, maybe 5 more frames play in the minute that follows, and theres no sound.
I did check the playback speed, and its set to 100%, and the clip plays normally if I select "clip" as opposed to "project".
