Disk spins when trying to burn but nothing happens

I just purchased a Pioneer DVR-100R and have been trying to burn something, anything, with no luck.

I am trying to make a data DVD with a single file as a test, just to see if that part of the equation is working. It preps the file fine, but when it goes to start the burning process, the drive spins up (loud sucker) but the progress meter stays at 0%. It just stays stuck at that, and the only way to stop it is to reboot the machine. Well, actually, turn it off. I can't even get to the restart menu.

The system is a Dell 2.5 ghz, WinXP with SP2. Using TDK DVD-R discs.
