Audio does not match video with mpg

Post by stm1968 »

Nature of the problem: I have an mpeg that plays fine in the preview screen but the audio on the burned DVD is about 5 seconds ahead of the video.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?): Used DVDShrink to get *.VOB file off of DVD. I renamed it *.mpg and used the add video file function. The file is about 2 minutes long and ca. 120 MB.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection? Sony DVD reader and burner

Project Settings: Just making a standard DVD with a menu for about 15 short movies

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD) : DVD Video

PAL or NTSC : NTSC

Error Codes (if any) : none

System information: contained in my User Profile (WinXP)

I own all of the Pixar DVD's and I'm taking the short animated films and outtakes off of them and trying to make a compilation DVD so my kids can watch them without having to constantly change discs in our player. I do not consider this to be a violation of copyright laws because I paid for the discs and I'm only making one copy for personal use.

So having made that disclaimer, I've been able to put all the shorts on the DVD except for "For the Birds" on the Monsters Inc disc. Initially, when I tried to import the VIDEO_TS directory, it loaded it in as a slideshow whereas all the other ones loaded in as a video. Then I renamed the video file (*.vob) to *.mpg and added it as a video file.

After it was loaded, it played fine in the preview window and the sound matched the video but it didn't sync the video and audio on the burned DVD. I even used the "check and repair" function and it said it fixed something. But then when I burned it again, it still didn't sync up the video with the audio.

Any ideas?

P.S. I'm using the trial version and still trying to decide if I want to buy the full version.

Your MPEG is corrupted. Don't let the preview fool you... I've had MPEGs that appeard to be fine when played on windows Media Player, but they generated out of sync DVDs and/or crashing of the various Ulead products.

It's probably getting corrupted when you cut & splice all those little bits of MPEGs. MPEGs are not meant to be edited. Ulead doesn't warn you about this, and their products do "try", but Ulead doesn't seem to be very good at it.

Try a special purpose MPEG editor. I use an MPEG editor called Womble MPEG Video Wizard ($100). If all you want to do is cut & splice, VideoReDo ($50) is good. You can get 30 trial versions of both of these. Unfortunately, both of these are MPEG editors only so you still need Movie Factory or something similar for DVD authoring.

You can try this feature in MF4.
May not work because of the way you captured the file using shrink and renaming it to mpg.

Under "Preferences" the (F6) key check the box ON that says
"Create Index file for better Mpeg performance/editing etc".
( I forget the exact wording, it's under preferences).
After checking that on import the file.
Instead of burning a dvd simply create dvd folders on the harddisk and
playback from the dvd folders using "PowerDvd", WinDvd or ulead dvd player by selecting "Play from dvd folder (or harddisk folder). Then
navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder, highlight it and click OK.
If the audio is out of sync it will show up either way, as dvd folders or
a burned dvd.

Hope this helps,
