Purchase Question

Post by kwest »

I have a new Dell laptop w/ 1.4 and 1.0 Memory and currently hacked my way through a project using MovieMaker2. I want to improve my flexiblity and tools. Given my system will I benefit from the purchase of VideoStudio over the MM2? I know I may need to up grade my HD, but overall what is your guidance on this purchase. I do small 5-10 packages for personal and work applications. This is a time sensitive question so, thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Hi Kwest, welcome to the boards... :)

Since it is a time sensitive question, I will get right to the point...

Yes I believe you would. VS9 has a great deal more flexibility then MM2. Have you read any information about VS9 on Ulead's website?

Download the free 30 day trial, then you will know if you will benefit. It's a fully functional TBYB, with the exception of MPEG4, HDV. But you can really get a feel for what the program can do..

Regards..

VS9 might be a little slow, though, with that 1.4 GHZ processor you have... quite apart from any hard disk issues.

unless it's a Pentium M 1.4Ghz. I have a Celeron M 1.5 laptop, and it's not too shabby at encoding. Let us know your laptop model number or fill in the system specs in your user profile.

When using VS9, enable the drop frame counter by going into "File >> Preferences" and click on the "Capture" tab then check the "Show drop frame information" box. If your hard drive is up to it, you should see zero dropped frames when capturing. Make sure DMA is enabled on your hard drive, and if you have problems, try enabling or disabling write caching. The VS recommendation is to disable it, but some users advocate enabling it. I switched from the former to the latter school a while back after a series of posts.
