Buffer Underrun and can't set slow speeds

Post by Greggy »

I'm suddenly getting buffer underruns on my Panasonic 16X DVD drive when burning at 16X. Worked great until tonight.

I tried some 8X media - same thing.

The data is coming off of a 7200 RPM USB 2.0 external drive.

DMA is enabled. I've tried rebooting. I downloaded the latest burning engine from the ulead web site. I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Also annoying - VS9 won;t let me set the burning speed any LOWER than 16X if I use 16X media in my 16X drive.

Greggy,
I would firstly check the panasonic web site to see if there is updated
firmware for the DVD Burner.
http://search.panasonic.com/polnav_index.html

Firmware is 'software' that is within the actual DVD burner itself to make it work and interact with the computer, The Manufacturers update that software every so often. They always put instructions with the update letting you know how to install that new firmware.

You will need to do a search for your particular model. If you don't know your model, then right click on "My Computer" on your desktop and select 'manage' then select device manager.

Most likley your problem has to do with the speed of the external hard drive. It can only supply data at 480 mips where the DVD writer trying to write at 16X can demand data at 1064 mips. Try placing your data on an internal hard drive to get the data speed up. On the Disk Creation page under options (the Gear at the bottom of the page) the buffer under run should be checked.

If it isn't checked and you can't change speed settings, I recommend you delete the DVD writer in Device Manager, shut down the computer and unplug the power cable to it and restart the computer. After the computer has completed the bootup sequence. Shut down the computer and plug the power cable back in and reboot. The computer should find the drive again and reinstall the driver for it.

After all that if you can't change speeds, you may have a defective drive.

I created a new ISO file and let my machine rest for the night and now everything looks OK.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Greg.
