I recommend that you back up your Library data file if you're going to try out either MediaStudio Pro or VideoGraphics Lab TBYB versions with VS9. The Library contains all of the video, audio, etc. clips that you've brought into VS, and includes any custom library folders you've created. Both of these programs latch a deathgrip onto the Ulead MPEG encoder, so when you uninstall either one they take the MPEG encoder with them. Needless to say the only recovery (if you have the ESD version like me) is to reinstall. I understand the box version has a Repair option which may work. Of course if you've saved all the SmartDownload files and the update packs the reinstall is a pretty painless operation.

So, should you want to try out either of the above programs, or just want to add the library to your backup routine (which I know everyone has ;-) ) your Library file is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserAccountGoesHere\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\9.0\VS_Video.dat

Of course, it's probably easier to backup the MPEG encoder itself. It should be located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG

But it still is a good idea if you've created custom folders to have a backup. You just might be thankful you did. ;-)

Hopefully this'll help someone,

Thanks Ron,

Great tip...

Also this got me to thinking (yes very dangerous to do)..

Is there a way for us that purchased the ESD, to create a disc that Windows/Ulead would recognize as the install disc. That way we could also use the Repair option.

I would think it could be done, by unpacking the file, then burning it to a disc. Then maybe to get it to recognize the disc as the install, one would have to uninstall VS9 (clean, complete uninstall) then install from the burned disc.
Make sense? I may try it when I have some time...

vidoman,

I have a feeling that the Repair option is probably something that's programmed into the boxed version. However, the creating an install disc is an excellent idea. It would be nice to have the program plus all the packs self-install.

BTW, I opted to have a backup disc sent to me when I bought the ESD version and it only contains the main program and that's it. Now why couldn't they just put everything you need on the disc?

I also purchased the Back-up Disc. What surprised me is that only the main program is on the disc, AND that it is not unpacked, where it can be used to do repairs...
