I’m new to this forum and may have submitted this to the wrong forum so I am re-submitting it. My apologies if it comes up twice on the PI page.
Since using PI (about 4 yeas now) I have tried to master masks. The manual is very brief in its explanation and assumes that everyone understands the process. Does any one know of any tutorials on using masks?
I have cared out a search on masks in the PI forum but dit not come up with any topic on this subject.

Did you check out this web site http://www.pircnet.com/
It has a lot of links to all sorts of tutorials and also offers a free beginners workshop. Even though, after approx. 4 years of use, you are not considered a beginner but it would surely help you to understand the tools in PI. It worked wonders for me and, like you, I was not a beginner. It took the course to make me understand how little I actualy knew of PI.
Give it a try. BTW, the masking tool is one of my favorites now and I often use it to extract an object from photos.

Thank you for the info on pircnet.com. You are right you never stop learning and I am always amazed at the depth of PI.
I notice your are in Melbourne, one of the frustrating things about living in Australia is going into a books shop and seeing dozens of books on Photo Shop an nothing on any other program. I have a heavy investment in video and editing software and the low cost of PI allows me to upgrade the video side of my business. PI provide for my needs although I haven’t spent the time needed to use all its features.
Thanks Again

Masks
I still do not understand masks. I went to a tutorial and I still don't understand it.
What do you use them for? I thought the image was supposed to turn red and then you did something with it.
I would like to lighten an area of a photo to seperate it from the back ground.
I am just below novice.

It is very simple really. You apply the matte over your image, paint with any paint tool in white color what you want to extract from your image, convert it to an object and do with it whatever you like. You can move it to a different canvas (extract the object) alter its properties like color, hue etc, apply filters to either the base image or your object, merge them again to one and you have a new image.
I would suggest to visit here http://www.pircnet.com/ and do one of the tutorials on masking techniques or, better still, take the free beginners work shop for PI to learn all aspects of PI.
