VS8 : crashing on render...

perhaps someone might be able to gimme a clue? i have 3 dv avi's taken from the television via my camcorder (personal use only! just for experimentation!) that i've successfully turned into one file, then share->create disc. i have tried with and without menus to burn, save to folders, and make an iso file, but at least ten times my machine has either frozen, rebooted, or given me BSOD. i'm running a 1.8 with 512mb, plenty of hd space, a 64mb videocard, running win2k. my computer craps out at different stages each time, but never gets beyond about 15% done. i've also tried to create the same with movie factory3.5 with the same sorts of results. it's only this video i'm having trouble with - others have worked perfectly in the past.
i've never had 2k fail on me before, and am wondering what could be causing the drama?

1. Get the V8.01 patch if you haven't done so yet, it fixes a memory leak that may be to blame here.

2. Try outputting to an ISO file or VIDEO_TS folder instead of burning directly to disk.
