VS9 Timeline project playback jerky

Post by computereliterate »

I am using VS9, when i playback video from the library it plays back perfectly. As soon as I drop that same video into the timeline and then play it back, it sucks, it is extremely jerky and unwatchable (my camera records video in mpeg4 and photo jpeg). When I burn the finished product after compiling it through the timeline, which includes video MPG4 and photo Jpeg to DVD the video quality is still jerky. Can someone please give me any ideas on what the problem may be. I am running Windows XP home SP2 with 480mb RAM. Every other aspect of VS9 works without fault, this is the only part that I can't sort out which is of course probably the most important as it affects the end result of my DVD's. I have no knowledge of computer terminology and don't want to just fiddle around with something I know very little about. PLEASE PLEASE HELP...........

Hi,

Playing back/viewing projects in Project Mode will be jerky, and the resolution not that great. It is just a Preview of what your finished project (the edits, titles, transitions, filters, etc..) will be. It is not intended to be very good. However if you followed the recommended procedures listed at the top of this forum, then your finished movie should play alright.

You stated that your system has 480 megs ram. While it is do-able, it can present problems in editing. Generally 512Mb is the lower end. Most use 1-2 gigs of ram.

MPEG4 is a highly compressed format, and is intended for distribution. There are those that use MPEG to edit without problems. Most of the time it is MPEG1 or MPEG2, and not MPEG4. It seems that your machine would not be up to the task of editing MPEG4. You didn't post much on your system which would help in determining this..

To locate some system information
Right click on My Computer and select properties. A dialog box will open. The top part on the first tab(General Tab) is your Operating System Win XP Home, which you did provide. The bottom part lists the information such as your Processor, which is???

You can then navigate to the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. In Device manager you will see several items listed in the left pane, each having a + beside it. Clicking on the + will expand it and reveal a little more information. For example expanding the Display Adapters tells you what type of Video Card your system has. Mine is a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200...

That should get you started with locating some more informatin that may be needed in troubleshooting your issue. You might also try searching this forum using the keyword "mpeg4". I'm sure you will find others that have issues similar to yours...

Regards..

I wouldn't say previewing a project is "jerky", at least not in my case, although previewing in Instant Playback mode will not give the clear, crisp picture that your finished product will have. Jerkyness(?) as I define it is the starting and stopping of the video and audio. The fact that you are experiencing the jerkyness after you've burned to DVD sounds like you have other issues.
For further help please post your clip and project properties.

Can we also assume that you have downloaded the free mpeg-4 plug-in which is available free to registered users...?

Michele,

I may be wrong on this, and someone like Ken will probably jump back in and correct me.
It looks like the video clip is NTSC format, ie; 29.97 frame rate, frame size of 640 x 480. Then your project properties are of course PAL.

While this can be done, changing the properties can produce undesirable results. You might try changing the the project properties to match the clip properties. One easy way to do this is go to Files>Preferences and then tick the box Show Message when inserting..... That way VS9 will prompt you to change them to match, when it finds the properties are different...

Hope that helps..

I don't know anything about mpeg-4 cameras and the format they shoot in. But I would be surprised if they only shot in NTSC format (unless you bought the camera in an NTSC country). If you bought it in Australia, then I would assume it would either be set by default to PAL, or would at least have a Menu setting in the camera to switch between systems...

On the other hand, did you correctly install VS9 to use PAL as the default system setting? When loading _any_ Ulead product, I always both select 'Australia' as my country (which should fix the PAL system, but sometimes, inexplicably, doesn't) AND also then choose PAL in the second choice available in the installation procedure. This seems to make sure PAL is then fixed as the system the program operates in.

I am also slightly concerned that the frame format you apparently capture in (640 x 480 ) is not only NTSC, but is also not the full NTSC setting (720 x 480 ), let alone the full PAL setting of 720 x 576 (as in your project settings).

Hi Ken, I have checked the camera settings, it is set on PAL not NTSC, and I also installed VS9 using PAL settings.
