No audio when capturing

Post by pcork »

I just bought a digital camcorder, and have not been able to successfully capture video yet. The video comes through on the computer fine, but I have not been able to get the audio to come through as well. I have the firewire cable connected into the port, and turn the camera on in my ULead, but the audio does not come through my computer's speakers. There is audio on the video because during playback my camcorder has sound. I've tried changing a bunch of different things and still can't get any audio input. I tried my analog camcorder too to make sure the firewire cable wasn't faulty, but I don't get any audio coming from it either so I assume I have a setting or setup wrong somewhere. It used to work, but now it doesn't so I wonder if I changed something without knowing it in the setup? Can anyone give me some different things to try that may be causing this problem?

By the way, I am using VS6. I have captured a number of things in the past with no problems, but now I can't capture anything with the sound included.

First check your Windows recording panel selection

Go to "Control Panel >> Sounds and Audio Devices >> Audio (tab at top)" then in the Sound RECORDING box click on 'Volume' - make sure the select tick is in 'Line in' - - - OK etc.

That was the first thing I checked when I was having problems. "Line-in" is checked and the volume is as high as it will go.

While you were in the sound control area did you also check the PLAYBACK panel to ensure none of the channels were muted- for some reason on my PC a tick in the 'Wave' channel mute box stops me hearing any sound in UVS

You said it's a digital camcorder connected through a FireWire connection -- if that's the case, you should be capturing audio and video in the DV format to an AVI file.

You do not need to mess with audio cables, mixers, audio sources etc., but you may need the AC-3 Dolby® Digital Audio Plug-In if your camcorder records audio in AC-3 format, because UVS doesn't support it out-of-the-box.
