NTSC vs PAL - file size surprise

Post by RDK45 »

I recently put together a set of about 50 digital slides in to a VS8 project. I created the first AVI file with normal NTSC AVI parms:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 2
Interleave audio for every 15 frames
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

I then created a second AVI file but this time with PAL parms:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 2
Interleave audio for every 15 frames
DV Audio -- PAL, 32.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

The surprise was that the PAL AVI file was 5.5GB while the NTSC was only .66 GB.

The resulting DVD/MPEG files appears to be about the same size.

Any ideas why? Thanks....RDK

RDK,
If you are making a slide show, you should use mpeg2 properties. Using AVI will only force you to reconvert everything to mpeg before you burn a DVD.

As for the different file sizes, the larger one may be uncompressed AVI.
