VideoStudio 9 : Problem to Read of Clip, part of DV video

Post by Dog Bull »

When I want to read a clip, witch is part of a full length DV video, I can read only the audio. In order to see the video, I have to turn off the audio of the clip. Can anybody help me ? I have directX 9.0C, and the Indeo Codec wich are on the VideoStudio CD are installed... :(

How are you importing the DVD clip.
From memory the Indeo Codec is mainly used for quicktime movies and not for ordinary DVD use.

VS9 problem to read a clip, part of DV video

Post by Dog Bull »

The DV video is imported from my SONY camcoder. In VS9, we have to type of DV imported files, type 1 and 2, with the sound "mixed" or "separated" . I try both types, and the problem is the same.

Aha, you are importing from your Sony Camcorder...
How? Firewire (IEEE1394 / iLink) I hope.

In Video Studio on the Capture screen,
Source should read "Sony -- MSDV"
Format "DV"
Under Options - select capture format of DV type 1
(For a reason unknown to all in this forum it defaults to DV type 2)
Under "Tools" "Change capture plug in" You should have
"Ulead DirectShow Capture Plug-in" selected.

Just to expand a little on one part of Steve's helpful reply, Steve and I both have Sony video cameras, and I can say with almost 100% certainty that (unless your camera is a very recent, very expensive and very sophisticated one) your camera is equipped with both a Firewire port (called an i-Link port on Sony cameras) and a mini USB port. On my camera, these are side-by-side and look very similar. Bit it is the i-Link port which should be used for capture of high quality digital video. The USB port, except in very recent, very high end video cameras, is only used to transfer low quality streaming video that you would get from a cheap webcam. It may also, on some cameras be used to transfer still images taken with the video camera.

The problem is that no camera manufacturer of which I am aware ever includes a Firewire cable, but always includes a USB cable if the camera also has a USB port. That gives the owner the idea that it is the USB cable which has to be used, when this is not the case. You will need to buy a Firewire cable, and make sure you get one that has the correct size plugs at each end. Normally they would be a small 4-pin plug for the camera end and a larger 6-pin plug for the computer end. Of course, you will also need to have a Firewire port on your computer, but if you don't have one, a Firewire card is not very expensive these days.

All the parameters are the one you say :

I use a firewire
I read Sony--MSDV
I read Format DV
I read DV type 1 (the problem is the same with type 1 and type 2)
I have selected "Ulead DirecShow Capture Plug-in"

But the problem still exists :
In Clip selection I can only have the audio or the video. In full project selection, there is no problem, I have audio and video.

Hi Dog Bull

You have not given any information on your pc set up.
The speed of your cpu and the amount or ram you have installed is important to mention but a few.

You should fill in the details from your ‘profile’ at the top of this page.

The symptoms you describe seem to indicate that your pc is struggling, without details we cannot comment.

Here is my configuration :
OS : windows XP home edition
Motherboard : intel i 848 P
Graphic Card : NVidia GeForce 6800 GT
Sound Card : Generic Realtek AC97 Audio
Processor : P4 3GHz HT
HD : 200 Go Ultra DMA
Memory : 1 Go

as written in the manual :
DMA is activated for primary and secondary IDE disk
The write caching is desactived for the HD
The virtual memory size is 2000 Mo

Before starting VS9 :
free physical memory 0.8 Go
UC used : 0%

reading a full project (audio and video) :
free physical memory 0.6 Go
UC used : 61 %

reading the same as a clip (just audio, that's my problem) :
free physical memory 0.75 Go
UC used : 12 %

I hope this will help

I forgot to say that I have loaded the corrective patch for VS9 (2005/08/25, 18.9 Mo) and the problem is still here.

Hi Dog Bull

Project playback is more demanding than clip playback as your memory usage reflects.
So having problems with clip playback is strange. Your pc profile looks good to me.

Do you have problems with all video files you play or is it only one.?
Corrupt files can cause all sorts of problems but are difficult to diagnose.
What are the properties of the video file.
Right click the file in the timeline and select properties.

If you are having problems with all files then I suggest a clean install of Video Studio.

I have problems with all AVI DV files, imported from my camcoder with VS9 or with my old Vidéo programm ARCSOFT SHOWBIZ :
All the AVI DV files, imported with VS9 or with ARCSOFT SHOBIZ have no problems with ARCSOFT, but problems with VS9.

With VS9 I have no problems if the clip is part of a MPEG video.

I will send you the properties of my video AVI DV files, and I will try to install VS9 again.

Here are the properties of the video files :
Format : AVI-OpenDML
freqency : 25.000 i/s
rate : 3512.91 kbps
Video compression : video DV type 1
24 bits 720x576;4/3
Audio compression : DV Audio-PAL
32.000 KHz 12 bits stereo

I put a new hard drive in my computer in order to have a clean HD, and I install on this HD VS9 : I have the same problem !!!

Thank you for your answers

Going by a process of elimination.

1. You have installed a new clean Hard Drive (are the ribbon cables firmly pressed in and not loose)
2. I take it you have made a clean install of your Windows XP (You did not use any imaging programs to copy your old XP onto the new drive did you?)
3. You have made a fresh install of Video Studio 9.
4. Your computer specifications appear fine.
5. You have followed the procedure outlined above by myself and Ken regarding capturing your video from your camcorder to your hard drive by way of a firewire cable.
6. The problem still exists.

It is possible that you may have a faulty firewire cable or firewire card.
It is possible there is a fault with your camcorder.
It is possible there is a fault with the video recording itself in your camcorder. This seems unlikely as you mention "All your AVI files" - unless of course they are all on the same tape (try another tape.)

Do you have a friend with a computer that you could possibly plug your camcorder into and perhaps test it with Xp's built in Windows Movie Maker. This will eliminate the camcorder/recording/cable.

If it works in his/her computer you would then need to put your IEEE1394 card into that computer and try again to test the card itself.

If it didn't work on your friends computer then you have isolated it to the camcorder/recording/cable. You would then need to try a new cable first.

I think that you just don't have the right video codec installed on your computer. Try getting some codec packs online and see if that helps.

While the problem may indeed be a codec-related one, installing a codec pack, which often contains dozens of unrelated codecs, more often than not causes more problems, including conflicts with other programs, than it solves. Be very careful about doing so. If you do go ahead with the idea, try, if possible, to install the codecs one by one, and uninstall them if they don't work.
