what is the best way to fit a xvid file on dvd?

Post by uriah »

I am burning a number of tv episodes to dvd and I have come across a problem when I try to add a XviD file to the project.

I have a number of AVI files that are around 250Mb in size and when added to the project, DMF estimates (in the bar down the bottom of the screen) that the amount of space taken up on the DVD will be around 500Mb.

That's fine.... the problem is when I try to add a XviD file.

The XviD files are also around 250Mb but when added to the project, DMF estimates that the amount of space taken up on the DVD will be around 2.3Gb!!

Why is this XviD file so big when I add it to the project? Is it because of the compression rate?

I guess I am a bit of a novice when it comes to codecs and how they work. I am learning a lot about them through trial and error but this has me stuck.

Do I need to convert my XViD files using something like "WinMPG Video Convert" or "WinAVI Video Convertor" before I add them to the project?

Thanks

MF may or maynot convert the file, depends on many factors especially the audio in the Xvid file.

Yes, your correct it's the compression.
Xvid is very compressed.
More compression than dvd-video uses (mpeg2).
The dvd-video compression MF uses will be based on your "Project Properties"

Clicking on the GEAR icon will display the "Project Properties" settings.
Clicking on "Change Mpeg Settings" will display a list of choices that
may work.
There are templates that come with the program.
Try the 2 hour template.
You can also make your own custom template and use that.

As you change the mpeg settings you will see the project size change
in the timeline.

If your using MF4 you can use the "Export" feature, 3rd icon down on the left.
You can directly export the file to a Mpeg2 file from the timeline and then
re-import that compliant file. What's nice about the export feature
is you can use a different bit-rate that the other files on the dvd
providing you export it out and create a dvd compliant file and
MF doesn't have to re-sample it for creation of the dvd.

Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot for your help maddrummer.

Using the "Export" feature has solved my problems.

I appreciate it.
