Has anyone seen a problem with VideoStudio 9 hanging nup when editing?
It only occurs with AVI files, works ok if I bring in MPEG files. When editing the timeline, VideoStudio 9 hangs.
I went back to VideoStudio8 and don't have the problem. I tried AVI files captured in Videostudio8 and they lock up in Videostudio 9 as well.
I tried the patch that mentioned fixes problem with AVI files, but that does not help
I did check the event viewer as suggested by someone esle, and I do see application hung errors for vstudio.exe, but not sure what all the info tells me. Any ideas?
Videostudio 9 hangs when editing with AVI files

Hi jensen709,
you might fill in the "system" info in your profile. Since you say VS8 worked for you, however, I doubt that it's a hardware related issue.
When you say VS9 crashes when you try to edit AVI files - what exactly are you doing? Trying to output to a single AVI file, an MPEG-2 file, or going to the create disk step?
Can you save an AVI file on your timeline to a new AVI file? Do your problems arise when you trim video?
As for the Event Viewer logs, they can be quite helpful, although the info in them is often somewhat arcane. If you see records of your pc looking for files it can't find, it can often show an install problem with a program.
Another thing you can try is to run Windows "Task Manager" when you try your editing in VS9. You may be able to pick up on something odd with your RAM or CPU usage just before the system hangs.
If you find that your VS9 can't even read AVI files, it may be a codec problem. Sometimes you can have other installed software that conflicts with VS - but it's maybe a long shot in view of your previous success with VS 8.
If, however, you installed VS9 over the top of VS8, and then later decided to uninstall VS8, it's possible that you might have deleted some necessary shared files. (another long shot!) If you have the retail version of VS9, you can always use the "repair" option. With a downloaded version, you need to do a clean re-install. This entails removing all trace of the previous install, which is a fiddly business covered in quite a few previous posts, for which you can search this forum if need be. A simpler alternative is to re-install VS9 into a newly created Windows user account.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.
I updated the relevant parts of my profile as you suggested.
here's an example of the problem. I just went into edit mode, inserted an AVI file (in this case one that was created in VS8 or earlier - 172 Mb), and while in Storyboard mode, hit play. stopped it, moved to a different part of the AVI by using the scroll bar, hit play, stopped it, moved again by scrolling, hit play, and it hangs! Very repeatable.
Same exact file in VS8 - no problem.
My original instalation was VS5, then I purchased upgrades to 8 and then 9.
The Windows eventy viewer shows Application Hang - Category (101), event 1002

Here are the properties as seen within VS9. Note - problem happens with ANY AVI, not just this one.
File
----
File Format: Microsoft AVI files -- OpenDML
File Size: 176,228 KBytes
Frame Rate: 29.970 frames/sec
Duration: 50.050 Seconds
Data Rate: 3512.11 kbps
Video
-------
Compression: DV Video Encoder -- type 1
Attributes: 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Total frames: 1500 Frame(s)
Audio
-------
Compression: DV Audio -- NTSC
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Total samples: 2,402,402 Samples
I also tried another file, difference in properties was that it was Video compression = DV Video Encoder -- type 2, and audio was PCM - still locked up.
