Has anyone been able to align pictures using HDR?

I'm stillusing th etrial version of PI 11, and it looks like it has some really great things. A few problems, too, apparently - reading this board is really scary.
The High Dynamic Range feature looks wonderful, except that, despite the "Clip after auto registration" checkbox on the HDR screen, I can' get the three pictures (overexposed, underexpesed, and just right) to line up. I haven't yet tried using a tripod, but my sample pictures are pretty well aligned to start with - but the program doesn't seem to make any attempt to finish the job.
Is there something I'm missing? Is there something to turn auto-registration on? Is there a way to do it manually? (HDR won't let me operate on more than one picture at a time if they have been cropped in an attempt to register them).
This would be great, if only... if only it worked!
Thanks.

We don't know how badly misaligned you images are but, for best results, you should use a tripod. Handheld is not a good start.
