New User - Trouble capturing from VHS

Post by Walt50Fire »

Good morning,

I'm a rookie, but can't find this issue on the board.

I'm trying to capture VHS tapes through a composite cable into my Tuner Card. VS9 will capture for about 5 seconds before it halts the capture because it can't locate the video source...

The captured clip is fine and the VCR continues to play,...just the capture process keeps kicking out.

Any ideas? Need more info? Let me know.

Thanks,
Walt

What tuner card do you have? Most capture cards come with capture software that's made specially for that hardware. Did yours come with capture software? Did you try it?

Does your tuner card have an audio input, or are you plugged into your sound card?

What file-format are you capturing to? AVI/DV is generally preferred. Highly compressed formats like MPEG can cause problems because the compression requires lots of processing. If the CPU continuously keep-up with the real-time video, you'll get problems.

I don't have the specs for the Tuner off-hand. I'll try and post them this weekend. It was the standard with the Dell XPS 400 running on Windows XP Media Center.

The only capture software that had come with the PC was Windows Movie Maker which I have had no trouble capturing with...but they capture as .WMV files.

The tuner card has no audio input so I plug the RCA's into my sound card. I have no problem viewing or hearing the tape, it's just that capturing stops abruptly because the video signal is lost or can't be found. After reading a bit more, I'm going to try and capture as an .AVI and see what happens as I have been trying MPEG.

I'll be checking back for any other suggestions and to update my progress or lack thereof.

Thanks,
Walt

All right, I tried the suggested AVI file type and the error persisted:

"No video was captured. Please check if there is any input signal. There may be no device selected."

Weird? Anyway, I think I'm going to have to run the VCR through a digital device so I can connect with the firewire. Any ideas, please post them.

Thanks,
Walter
