Hi,

I have an old computer and an analog camcorder. I would like to transfer my VHS tapes to CD. As my computer only has a CD burner, I can only make a VCD. Because of this situation, I bought DVD Xpress. It is bundled with Capwiz and Vidio Studio 7.

I am an absolute beginner and do not even know how to cut out sections of unwanted vidio so I am therefore, only attempting to make a direct transfer at this time. I was able to burn a VCD that played on my computer. It had both vidio and audio when played on the computer. However, when I attempted to play it on my home DVD player the vidio was OK but the I had no sound. I have used my CD burner to make audio CD's and they have played perfectly on my home DVD player. Does anyone have any suggestion as to any solution to my lack of audio problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Ken

We would need more information about the capture and project properties you are using. Also, you must make sure you are burning to the VCD specifications. You can find those here: http://www.videohelp.com/vcd.

Also, you may find the quality of VCD to not be adequate. If your DVD player supports it, you may want to consider using SVCD instead.

I really don't know what you are referring to when you ask about "capture and project properties". If you mean what settings I am useing, they are for vcd standards made on a NTSC basis.

When I installed Capwiz and used the wizard I was asked what format I wished to burn. I checked The Vcd box and also stipulated that I was in the U.S.A. (NTSC).

Do you or anyone else know of any VS7 specific tutorials I might avail myself of. I am confused as to why I cannot get audio on the VCD. I have made VCD's with VCDeasy and have not had a problem. I don't wish to use that program though because I want the flexibility of the VS editing capability.

Thanks for any help,
GuyL

I would suggest to seriously consider upgrading to a DVD burner. You can buy one well under $100 and can hold 6x the amount of data as a cd.

With a cd, you'll only burn about 15 mins of video, oppose to 2 hrs (at 4000 bit rate) with a DVD.

Yes, you are correct, I am capturing with capwiz and trying to edit and burn with VS.

As a point of interest, I have MPEG-1 (VCD) files on my hard drive that I can burn successfully with VCDEasy. Those VCD's have both video as well as audio and can play on my home DVD player. As an experiment, I tried to burn the vhs tape that had been captured with Capwiz with VCDEasy. It had video but not audio as well. I was begining to think the ULead software that is bundled within the ADStech DVDXpress or perhaps the capture device itself was not picking up the audio portion. This, however, could not be the case because I am able to play the VCD on my computer without a problem.

Any suggesstions from anyone would be appreciated.

Now I understand the situation but still need a bit more information to continue.

Insert your captured clip into your project.

On the file menu, click on project properties and tell us what those properties are.

Right click on the clip itself and choose properties and tell us what those properties are.

When you play the video in ulead is there audio? If you play the clip in windows media player does it have audio?
